[ walking into an empty police station at night isn't something usual people do. only one light's on; the one Riku stands under as he works to find out the percentage of closed cases versus cold cases. every manilla folder he checks is collected into a stack, and then there's a tally added onto the corresponding side of the board with a red marker

[ Riku's not the only person still at the police station though, if the sound of footsteps echoing in the near empty halls is any indication.

A short guy in a janitor's uniform with ear buds in his ears makes his final rounds about the place, ready to get out of there, only not because of the blizzard that's just raging outside. It's not gonna be fun walking home in that but he'll eventually have to do it. He's just taking a little bit longer in leaving the station.

Roxas stops short though when he sees that there's someone still here, apparently working overtime. Or just not wanting to go out in the storm either. ]

Uh, hey. Shouldn't you be heading out?

[ he steps back and turns towards Roxas; he knew he was going to be approached, after all. and in a second's flash, he knew and understood the person before him. ]

I guess. [ he muttered, and then closed his eyes. ] Not worth it in the storm.

[ Yeah, it's not looking very pleasant out there. ]

So just going to stick it out here?

[ Not like he can fault the guy; he's pretty much doing the same. ]

his eyes scan through timelines, wondering what exactly this janitor would do. was he employed recently? or has Riku just not noticed him among his peers calling him "freak"? he tilts his head slightly at him, seagreen eyes examining his stance.

what has made this person what he is? ]

No one's waiting for me at home, why not?

[ Well, he's not sure what to say to that, just curious why this guy hasn't gone home yet. But again, he doesn't blame the guy if he doesn't want to go out in this weather. Or maybe it's something else...?

Roxas stands there awkwardly, knowing he should go but not wanting to. He only got this job because he'd been desperate for money- paying for school isn't the easiest when you're an orphan with no one to sponsor you after all. The pay's not that bad despite having to clean the toilets and stuff. At least he didn't have to make the coffee, that'd be a disaster. ]

What.. are you doing then?

[ Wouldn't hurt to make conversation, right? ]

[ why are you talking to me?

he looks at Roxas very clearly, lips in a thin line. not upset, just clearly confused. working here, he must know that he's talking to the freak of the squad. he must know that Riku is the town psychic and therefore the town clown. hardly anyone doesn't know it. is he just being kind? ]

Just... [ he breathes out a light sigh. ] finding out how many cases I've closed.

[ Roxas has too much on his plate to worry about who he's talking to or the rumors that people like to spread around the place. Plus, he doesn't talk to people that much anyway, so doing this much is even a surprise to him. But there's something about this guy... and it's not because of his psychic status- he doesn't even know that much.

A kid apparently not from town and just going to the local university and trying to make it on his own, yeap that's him.

Besides, this doesn't seem that bad. ]

So you're going through all those files? Sounds like it'll take a while.

[curepotion]

[ if he knew, Riku would wish more people were like Roxas.

he's been through too much, he's been scrambling and forcing himself to perform to the best of his ability for this town. he's been trying to keep them safe, and every effort just gets con and liar thrown back into his face. even if he's saving their lives, they don't seem to care. Riku really would prefer that people just--minded their own business. ]

It will. I don't mind.

[ he keeps his head turned toward the board, but he raises his voice a little. ]

Are you... done with cleaning?

[dualstance]

[ And if Roxas knew about Riku, he probably wouldn't have cared much. If the guy is helping to save lives, why should it matter how he's doing it? Though he'd be surprised at first, if he were honest, but it'd pass easily.

He scratches the back of his head. ]

Ah, well. I am but I'm not looking forward to walking home in that- [ He gestures vaguely towards the window, obviously meaning the blizzard. ] So I guess we kinda have the same reasons for not leaving yet.

[ Looking at the stack of files Riku still has to go through, he wonders if the other is going to stay here the whole night. ] Want some help?

[ Though he offers, he isn't sure he's even able to look at case files, being the lowly janitor that he is. Still, doesn't hurt to ask. ]

[ though he's not surprised by the other's question, he truthfully hadn't thought about his answer. it came up too quickly. but he only needs to let his eyes drift up into the right corner of his eyes--memory recall--for him to look back at Roxas. ]

Sure.

[ he's not that much of a masochist after all. ]

[ He half expects Riku to shrug him off- the guy seems like the type to do that, but color him a little surprised when Riku agrees to the random idea. So it takes him a second longer to let it register in his head before he smiles a little and makes his way to where the other is standing. Yeah, Riku doesn't seem like a bad guy after all. ]

So, what am I looking for?

[ Picking up one of the files and opening it up, his face kind of blanks out at the gibberish he's looking at. ]

[curepotion]

[ no timelines are greatly affected. there's no horrible decisions that stem out of Roxas looking at these as far as he can see, so why should he even try? maybe he'll like the idea of looking at the files and search for a new career in policework. he saw a branched off timeline of Roxas' that had that possibility. ]

On the right side of the case file there's a picture and under it, there's a stamp. If it says 'apprehended' or 'solved', it's closed. If it doesn't say anything, it's cold.

[ He just nods in understanding at the simple explanation. Well, there's no way he could mess that up, right? And he's not a total dummy, so shouldn't have to worry about anything too much.

Right? Right. ]

And I make a tally mark of the closed ones, right?

[ Looking at the file in his hands, he can see that this is one of the solved ones. ]

Did you do all the ones that are solved?

[curepotion]

Yeah. [ and he fishes out a marker to give to Roxas so he can jot the closed ones down on the whiteboard. ]

These are all the cases Ansem Wyse and I did.

[ so far, closed cases are leading. 18-3. ]

[dualstance]

Ansem Wyse? [ He takes the marker and makes a tally for the file in his hands. ] Uh, who's that?

[ Call him an idiot or clueless, but somehow he has a feeling he should know that name and he obviously doesn't. Really, all he pays attention to is his job and school work. There isn't much else that grabs his attention, not even in this work place where interesting cases are taken in and solved.

If it's not his business, it isn't his focus. Well, most of the time at least. ]

He's my partner. The leading detective in this squad.

[ not so much a name Roxas should know as one that is regularly talked about--in certain circles. Riku knows that Wyse knows pretty much everyone in this town, including the chief of police. ]

Long blond hair, sort of old? [ ... a smirk. ] Likes ice cream a little too much?
