This happened to me a week or so after my birthday in 2005. Eye kinda hurt when I went to bed, woke up in total blackness. It is terrifying. Having come through it though, at least I now know it isn't permanent. That doesn't make it any less terrifying when it is happening. Of all of the stuff that MS can do to you, total loss of vision like this is the absolute hardest. I know from experience. It was the hardest couple of months I have ever had to face.
The mistake I made was not doing steroids. Have your friend insist. As nasty as steroids are, they helped when this happened to me the second time (which was, thankfully only one eye at a time).
Most of my distractions (key coping mechanisms) were gone when this happened. My best and closest friends kept me distracted and got me through it. They read to me, visited with me, kept me sane.
She's done the steroids, and in the ER they gave her a big ol' shot of more. Sometimes it's only a temporary fix, as it was this time. And, like I did, she's got to sport an eye patch for a while. Eye patches suck gator balls; they're itchy and they never quite fit right. Bah.
Fuck MS dude. Like really? My mom has trouble with her legs going numb at random moments and she's hot all the fucking time, she gets overheated like a dog in a car in summer. And she can't focus on things, her memory's sketchy sometimes. MS can suck my dick.
Best wishes for your friend, and of course as always for you. :/
For shiz - I'm doing better this summer than I have in a long time, but I am having bad memory lapses (both short- and long-term) and the leg numbness is such an ordinary symptom that I rarely even notice it anymore, unless it also starts to hurt, or I almost fall over when I stand up.
Those are T-shirts we should totally make - "MS CAN SUCK MY DICK". They'd sell millions.

As much as heat messes with me, that's scary as hell.
