The book I have (not the same series as yours) for my year has the following:

Larry Niven
Ryy Mitsuse
James Tiptree Jr. (not yet revealed, Pohl says "...every time I see in my peripatetic career a date when I will be in the neighborhood of the city where he lives and suggest we get together for a drink, it turns out that in his peripatetic career he is that week off to Borneo, Brooklyn, or Swaziland.")
Grahame Leman
Doris Piserchia
Harlan Ellison
Harlan Ellison
H.H. Hollis
John Brunner
and ooh Pohl gave himself a slot.

Though Pohl does explain that he put his own story in because he ran out of advance money to buy someone else's story.

Often. Certainly one finds it odd in a "This Is The Best Stuff Of The Year, As Chosen By Meeeeee!" anthology.

On the other hand, if, for example, Ramsey Campbell was editing an anthology, I'd be disappointed if one of his stories were not in the book.

Of course, I didn't write anything for Haunted Legends even though I had a co-editor in Ellen Datlow who could have rejected or edited a piece because it would have looked bad. It's not like people will buy that book because of my association with it.

Basically, when the editor isn't a famous writer, it looks weird. Even when the editor is a famous writer and the material is for a best-of annual, it looks weird.

The title is "The Taste of the Dish and the Savor of the Day". My google-fu says it's about French cuisine and immortality.

Never read anything by him. I had him confused with James Blish for some time, which is part of why.
