Bird news

This morning the yard was full of fat, waddling and gobbling robins (Bucky cat would have loved it) saying "I got to see about something - I'll see you at the bird bath later." There were 3 Baltimore Orioles trying to feed out of the sugar water feeder at once - tipping it over onto each other. A couple of frumpy baby Cardinals at the seed feeder

Do birds actually like suet? Or is the suet just to make all the seedy stuff stick together?

This is tentbeetle, Norwaygranny is frying chicken for supper. Yes and yes. In the winter,when there is a limited amount of fat bugs around, they get by by eating the beef fat. It also helps stick seedcakes together if you make them. Some times I just put some raw strips of beef fat up in the tree. If I don't put them over seven feet high, Nuzzybears German Shepherd jumps up and steals them. You are a good and obedient kid, how did you turn out that way. That is not common these days.

So, is it maybe a good idea to have a seed feeder in the summer and a suet feeder in the winter? I don't have room on my deck for both (I have a shepherd's hook with only one hook) but could alternate based on the season....

Tent beetle says, Yes seedsin summer and suet and good old cob corn in the winter Then I use a mix of sunflower seeds millet, cracked corn just for good measure. In a sheltered place of course. I have been thinking about getting a nice heated bird bath for the winter.

I wish I had room for a bird feeder and cob corn for squirrels. Squirrels always remind me of my grandpa, so it'd be nice to see them more than when they come up and eat from the bird feeder!
