A spokesperson for the BBC has told ATV Today that there are ‘no plans’ to order a second series of the BBC One drama Single Father. The four-part drama aired on BBC One in the Autumn on Sunday evenings opposite Downton Abbey on ITV1. Against such strong opposition on ITV the drama was dwarfed in terms of ratings launching with 4.8 million viewers ( Read more... )

I was always under the impression that it was a "standalone" series, so I'm surprised to see this. Granted, it could perhaps have done with being a five-parter because Mick Ford packed so much in, but I can't see where a second series could go.

Although "Single Father" was only ever planned as a standalone four-episode drama, Mick Ford said that he had an entire back-story in his head, and based on that I wouldn't be surprised if he had a sequel mapped out, too.

I'd have loved to have found out more about Dave, his family, Rita's history, etc, and how (or even if) things worked out between him and Sarah. However, I daresay that Mick Ford is busy on other projects and the ensemble cast have all moved on to other things, so I imagine that planning a second series would be quite difficult.

If i'm being honest, I'm quite relieved.

I think he's a great actor but this show has to be a definite low point in his career; it gradually got ever more ridiculous as the episodes progressed and a second series would only have been asking for more trouble.

I have to disagree with you. I think DT's acting of the role was superb. Really wonderful. In fact, I found the acting of everyone to be excellent. It was the soapy plot that let the program down for me. [Plus, I have zero tolerance for women who deliberately get pregnant without their SO being asked to consent to having his sperm used to bring a life into the world, so that bit of the plot did NOT sit well with me. The Dave and Sarah relationship will crash and burn, imo, and another two eps would have tied it all up nicely.]

Yeh I wasn't criticising his performance, sorry if that wasn't clear. I was merely critising the program, like you, finding the plot ridiculous.

It was one of those shows that I wouldn't have watched if he hadn't have been in it.

I loved it actually, but I don't think a sequel would have worked. If anything, it would be interesting to see a prequel, get some backstory.

I'm not at all surprised by this to be honest. From what was said at the time it was being made, they only ever intended it to be a one-off drama, so I never expected them to even consider a sequel.
