why does Dave need to have adopted the other three children?
I was talking to some friends about this earlier in the week, and they said that the reason she and her husband got married was because when they were talking about trying for kids they found out that the father has no legal rights otherwise. If the mother dies, the father is not a legal guardian unless he's adopted them, whether he's on the birth certificate and biologically their father or not.

I was hoping that Sarah was right about Rita, but judging by the preview... /sob So heartbreaking!

ETA: Oo, i meant to mention, i could not believe how beautiful Edinburgh was!!! Now i totally want to go there on vacation.

Wow, I checked into it and you're right. Unbelievable.

Though the law seems to have changes for births registered from 2003 onwards in England and Wales, in Scotland unmarried fathers only have full parental rights from births registered from 2006 onwards.

Poor Dave is screwed.

Okay... ex-wife, Tanya's mom, just inched past Anna on my get-over-yourself list. Not by much, but enough.

Also, I agree w/ catchester that Anna may know more about Rita's other life than she's letting on ( ... )

Yeah... I facepalmed over the 'company card' Dave, what were you thinking?

I pretty much agree with everything you said!

I just hope that Sarah didn't know aout Rita's other life. I think the ignorance thaat she displayed during that conversation was a bit feigned, and I think she went off a bit too quickly afterwards to cover perhaps? Or perhaps she just was legitimatly anger that Dave was having a go at her dead best friend.

Okay, I'm going to jump right into the shallow end of the gutter here and say it. The sex scene was too short. It was cut too quickly--bingbangzoom!--and it was over. And apparantly according to reports the director was having difficuly showing enough arse, so instead he gave us no arse at all. Would it have killed him to let us have some? Just a little? And frankly, Suranne looked underwhelmed. I'm just sayin'. Dave was so...GUH and she just didn't seem to be responding very much ( ... )

I completely agree that there wasn't enough to the sex scene.
Priorities: I have them.

I was rather non-plussed by the sex scene too. Given it's a family drama, I understood initially why they opted to edit out the nudity. Yet after the scene, I was thinking, 'So it's considered too raunchy to show DT's arse, but indicating penetration isn't?' If nudity wasn't allowed, they could have at least shown him...erm...finishing ;)

I was rather surprised by the penetration bit, myself, as they had just shown them both with pants/trousers still on. I'm also wondering whether they used protection, didn't seem to be time for it if there wasn't time to take off the pants!

I am rather amazed by how much they seem to find time to put into one episode, but come on, couldn't they spend another 30s on this? lol

ETA: Oo, just occurred to me that maybe there will be an extended/restored version of the scene on the DVD?

I think the kids are Dave's. He's right to be worried about this issue, but we need to remember that Rita isn't here to defend and advocate for her side of the story. As much as Dave loves his kids, I think deep down he almost doesn't want them right now. He even said as much at the end of episode one when he tearfully told Sarah that he didn't want to be a good dad. I think right now he would rather be a worry-free partner to Sarah, rather than a single father with bills and in-laws and a stepdaughter who, despite being raised by him, doesn't seem to want him. So, he demonizes Rita in his heart and professes to move on. But I think we'll find in the next episode that the children are his, that Rita's ultimate loyalties were with him, and that the sobbing in his bedroom is a new wave of grief because he really has lost his partner ( ... )

This.

Its natural to develop doubts about your loved ones after they've gone, and unfortunately the fact that they cannot tell their side only worsens the doubts one is feeling. Finding out all this dirty laundry after Rita's gone (and with her sister being absolutely no help at all) Dave is left to draw his own conclusions and, while thats understandable, I do think he is drawing the wrong ones.

That said, this kind of stuff is the very reason why I love David Tennant so flippin much. There is so much underlying tension and angst in all of his scenes, he just breaks my heart. (And he's delicious to boot. That smile, the crinkly eyes, the freckles, the dimples, the voice-- dear god. The abbreviated PG sex scene was appreciated regardless of its PGness and brevity.)
