Ten and the Seven Cities of Gold

I've talked before about how Mari and I name and seed our Minecraft worlds. It's sort of a natural outgrowth of our respective careers and nerdiness, after all; she's an archaeologist, I'm a linguist in the Southwest, and we both really enjoyed Chip & Ironicus's Uncharted LPs. And when you're also both kind of indecisive, it's nice to have a theme ( Read more... )

i have these questions..., new quivira, mari is j33nyus, minecraft, nathehellyousayno

Reminding me again that I want to track down a DVD of The Mysterious Cities of Gold.

By the way, if you think Cibola is hard, you try finding info on Norumbega! Yes'm, we New England folk have our very own Viking city. On my list of Places To Walk is Norumbega Tower, erected in Weston, Massachusetts by a mad 19th century gentleman chemist, best known for reinventing baking powder, who was CONVINCED he had found a Norse settlement on the shores of the Charles River. So he built a tower to commemorate the event, as you do, and it's still there.

See--while said legendary Viking city is awesome--it hasn't quite entered pop culture in the same way the Seven Cities of Gold have. Which is why I'm so *head tilt* about the lack of information on those Seven Cities; you'd think something that's shown up in, say, that cartoon series they should totally have on DVD (one day I would love to watch that whole thing, too--perhaps we should get some sort of group watch together, hmm) would have a lot more information. Or hell, someone would've come in and named them what they thought they should be (though there are variations on Cibola, interestingly enough). But it's missing, except for in an old anthropology book ( ... )

Oh yeah, I have been reading Lost Continents by Sprague de Camp. Le Plongeon and Donnelly and Churchward are the best. How could I forget good old Aac, Coh, and Queen Moo (of Mu)?

Oh, and you've seen my pics of the Babson Boulders of Dogtown, right? Massachusetts is rich in pseudoscientists.

Unlike the PC version, Minecraft maps are limited in size, so I just made those worlds in Creative and flew around them to get the whole of the map covered (minus the last two, that Mari and I flew around). It may be a practice i keep up with worlds I want to create, because my choice of seeds often generate worlds that are a little...wonky.

Minecraft XBox has a "Share to Facebook" option, where it'll take a screenshot of your game and upload it to a Facebook album. Very handy and something I wish could've been incorporated into other games (or even have the screenshot saved to the hard drive! 'CAUSE IT'S POSSIBLE). You might be able to see the whole messy album at this link, though the Privacy settings are not cooperating so much for me right now so that miiight not work. But it's a feature I like, so there's plenty to look through ;)
