Felt like a TOTAL novice and was hugely embarassed that, I gather, when I was pumping my rear tire on the trail today on my 6am ride, I damaged the tire tube around the valve. Result: my first flat on a bike I've ridden for maybe 70 miles. Big Boo! Had the spare tube, but no tools to change the flat, so I had to have my dad rescue me on Riverside
