the ones that got away...

The local bookstore had a sale today, and I bought several very yummy books that I've had my eye on for quite a while, including a lavish book on Hadrian, Ad Infinitum (a book on the history of Latin), and a biography of Augustus. (I seem to buy books in thematic groups at these sales.) I also got the new Donne biography by John Stubbes--mostly ( Read more... )

Oh, I love A Little Princess! I read it when I was five or six for the first time and it's been one of those books I can always go back to when I'm in a bad mood ever since. It was actually some years before I read The Secret Garden, and while I do love it, I always preferred A Little Princess. Strange how these things work.

The one book that has been absolutely taunting me these days is Azincourt by Bernard Cornwell, because it's only out in hardcover and I really can't justify buying a hardcover at full price. That, and I really want a copy of the Ives Anne Boleyn biography, but it's also expensive. Feh.

Yes--I read The Secret Garden first, and I think that had a lot to do with my response to it. I liked the fact that Mary was so bad-tempered, and I think I expected Sara to be more like that! But I love her now.

I was able to buy a few of the books I've wanted at a discount yesterday...but there are so many more that I'm still looking at longingly! Such is the life of a bibliophile...

For the record, Prince of Stories is very unlike The Sandman Companion, in that it gets into a lot of stuff about Gaiman, himself, and also... well... everything he's ever written (including Sandman, of course).

And, yes, I, too, liked that Pan's Labyrinth reflected the old idea that faerie tales were generally about why you didn't go into the woods at night.

Sorry for the random post, but I was just puttering around lj and came across your blog.

Hey, I have no problems with a random comment. :) Putter away!

Yes--the fact that the world of Pan's Labyrinth is actually potentially *dangerous*. That gets lost sometimes, so it was nice to see it there.

And I'll keep that in mind about Prince of Stories--thanks!

I actually got an advanced reader's copy of King of Stories... Getting galleys is one of the limited number of perks at my sometimes-Kevin-Smithian job at a bookstore (and not, like, the Kevin Smith whose made a bunch of movies and has legions of fans, either. Pre-movie, "I'm not even supposed to BE here, today!" Kevin Smith. Just so we're clear)

So, I shall extend the friend/counter-friend offer, since anyone who's actually got a tag for "anti-stratfordian nonsense" is someone I want on my friends list. It actually sparked some debate in my journal, a while back...

Hee. Oh, Jacobi, why? There is really not as much under that tag as there ought to be...

Just as fair warning, a good bit of my journal has recently turned into "why can't I write my dissertation?" angst. But you are certainly welcome to friend me, and I'll friend you regardless.
