(I often think that a reading group with Pamela Dean's Tam Lin as the starting point, and then followed by some of the texts that get read or referenced, would be a fun time. Maybe it's just that I found myself reading Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, and The Revenger's Tragedy in very short succession this term ( Read more... )

I don't know about the reading--the only professor I've had in grad school who cared about the art of reading aloud would read passages aloud frequently, ask us to do so as well, and stop us every few words to correct pronunciation and delivery. I don't think there's really any other way... but definitely better comprehension would help, I would think. I would imagine that a lot of students would feel like they really got something out of the class if they could gain some competence in reading aloud. Probably reading aloud helps comprehension to a certain extent, too...

That's a good point! At least it'll give me another, more concrete, way into talking about particular passages. We might be able to talk about which words get emphasis, etc. then.
