I really appreciate that you understand how busy we are and I apologize in advance for not being able to immediately address your post. There also happens to be a lot of posters on LJ with similar issues and concerns about FanLib however, as I am sure you are aware, not everyone in the community agrees on everything. Over the next couple of weeks I am organizing a way to have a more open dialog that will hopefully be acceptable to the great many posters with varying opinions. Again, I apologize for not being able to address your well thought out post and appreciate your patience as we try and make this an organized dialog.

Will you organize it on lj where we live? Or will you insist on taking it over to a Fanlib run site? Because that right there will speak quite a bit to how serious you are about having a dialogue.

What about the discussion at lotrfanfiction.com on April 21st? stewardess May 18 2007, 01:51:41 UTC
Chris, the issues Telesilla and others at Livejournal have raised first appeared [as far as I know; there could have been something even earlier] during a discussion between a FanLib employee and fanfiction writers, April 21, 2007, at lotrfanfiction.com.

http://www.lotrfanfiction.com/news.php?action=newsstory&nid=65

That was almost a month ago. By all means take your time, but also be aware that, the more time passes, the more doubt grows.

If you examine Telesilla's objections, and those at lotrfanfiction.com, you will discover they are identical when it comes to the key issues: compensation and liability. While the fanfiction community lacks a board of directors to present a united front, that is not a valid excuse to avoid answering questions.

While I'm not at all surprised that you declined to follow through on the dialog you invited me to participate in, I am somewhat disappointed. I have repeatedly stated that I understand how busy you must be, but I would like to put it to you that if part of your job--as presented by your company's goals--is to build a bridge between fandom and the producers of media content, you might want to take an opportunity like this to connect with some of the fan fic writers in the LJ community.

I offered you a couple of options--take one question/comment a day, or assign someone else to answer for FanLib--and I'd like to follow through on a question inalasahl raised and offer yet another option. Have you considered using either your personal LJ or an LJ community specifically created for discussion of FanLib as a bridge between FanLib and LJ fan fiction writers? I would be more than happy to friend your LJ or a comm and make sure to notify metafandom each time an oppertunity for a dialog came up ( ... )

I don't pretend to speak for all of fandom, but I strongly suspect I'm not alone in this ( ... )

I wish I could be this articulate. All I want to do is scream like Jane Curtin: "Why don't you just admit it? You don't know what you're doing!"

Can you tell me which community he is referring to exactly, when he announced that "ot everyone in the community agrees on everything."? Because now my curiosity is piqued.

I think he means the LJ community, and no freaking kidding. Nobody ever agrees on everything. But I'm certainly seeing a lot of agreement on the fact that there is something rotten in the state of FanLib, and I want to know what's stinking and how to make it go away before I immigrate, assuming I do. Which, judging from the TOS and FAQ analyses, is slightly less likely than President Bush moving to Baghdad.

Also, cute icon.

First, you responded to criticism of FanLib by spamming several journals with the same poorly-written rant. Not only is such spamming contrary to LJ etiquette--as you might have known, had you ever actually used the journal you were posting from prior to last night--but the fact that you didn't even take the time to run the post through the built-in LJ spellchecker does not inspire confidence in FanLib's ability to provide quality content. (That same point also applies to the FAQ, which could also have used some proofreading.)Let alone issues of coherence, spellcheck, spamming, comment deletion, and everything else -- this is someone who claims to be one of the founders of what claims to be a legitimate and high-quality business, and this is the way he responds to criticism ( ... )

If you want to talk to us about the issues we have, you could always use your LiveJournal. If you post answers there, be assured that people will notice, and you will get a dialog going -- if you answer the comments posted to you, of course.

Call me cynical*, but I'm not about to bet the (nonexistant) farm on an LJ dialog happening any time soon, here, on whathisname's LJ, or really anywhere else. Maybe I'm just too old and tired and mean to be hopeful, but me, I'm not exactly picking up tons of "we really mean it, and will do what it takes to assuage your fears and take care of you" vibes from anyone involved with Fanlib. And I've only just gotten into this. I've no clue how the months of silence and ignoring basic, and legitimate, questions asked by the fanfic community at large has affected this issue ( ... )

Oh, I don't think he will actually use his LJ to talk to us. It's more me pointing out that he could and he's too chickenshit to do so.

Yeah, that's the impression I got, as well. I'd call it sad, if I didn't firmly believe their own stupidity is bringing it down upon them. Well, that and they're completely (and possibly intentionally) oblivious to the danger they're putting the community they hope to make their money off in.

...ok, not my best, most grammatically correct sentence, but I hope you see what I mean...
