Bike commuting weight loss

Sep 19, 2007 09:44

This morning my scale indicated that I have lost a total of 51 pounds since I started bike commuting, and since I got the fancy fat monitoring scale the fraction of my total mass that is fat has gone down by 10%. Which means that most of that 51 pounds that I lost was actually fat. 50 pounds is about the same weight as 6 gallons of water. Those ( Read more... )

Awesome job!

Note that there is a (sort of) negative feedback loop operating here- as your body loses weight, it spends less energy just moving around- so your final approach to your intended weight may be slower than the initial rate of weight loss. This isn't an idea that I have specific empirical backing for, but it seems to follow simply enough from plausible assumptions. So if such a slowdown happens, I hope you aren't discouraged. You've done a great job so far.

Weight loss slowdown? teknotus September 19 2007, 17:45:29 UTC
I seem to be compensating for that by biking more. When I started I couldn't even ride to work, and home on the same day. I would ride the bus for a few days in between. Took me 3, and a half months before I could do it both ways every workday of the week. But I would bike home, and then drive to get dinner, and I would drive on the weekends too. I keep decreasing how much I drive, and biking longer distances with more hills at a faster pace. As the weather gets worse I'm going to be carrying extra clothes with me (more weight), and fighting storm winds. I don't think I will slow down the weight loss for a while still because as I become more capable I just push myself harder.

congrats on staying motivated and los! I bike/MAX commuted yesterday, and then I fell off the wagon today (didn't have enough time to make it before a morning meeting).
