Yeah, that schedule is approximate. While NS tries to keep the Crescent on time, you can expect the occasional delay due to freight. The Southern mainline between DC and ATl consists of alternating single and double track, and there is the occasional delay. I don't know the condition of things past Atlanta on the route, but I do know that it is still one of the most reliable trains timewise.
It was also the last private overnight passenger train to be turned over to Amtrak. Amtrak was created out of the smoldering ruins of the government forced private road passenger service in 1970 and Southern didn't feel the need to turn the Crescent over until 1979.

That's a good board for Amtrak info. Also, if you take #19 down (Southbound Crescent) it leaves at a time when I'm normally up.
