Congratulations! My first reaction was, "Your daughter can't possibly be that old!", but I guess she was fifteen about, oh, three years ago, so she'd be the right age now. I've heard Hofstra is good.

I have no idea about crowd funding for education, I'm afraid.

I know! It's scary. :-)

I wonder how one would go about starting it up.

My son is a junior in high school and I've been doing the college hunt since last year. Oh god...when will he decide to start applying? Funding? Ha! I think he's gonna be in hock for many years.

Good luck :-)

It's an amazingly byzantine process.

I grew up on LI, Suffolk, not Nassau but near enough- Hofstra is a good school and far enough from the City that you can get all the city-life experience you could want, but also in the suburbs so it's not overwhelming.

LI is EXPENSIVE though. Tax on everything, gas is high, there's almost no public transportation. Great food though. Sigh, I miss NY sometimes.

The mass transit has to be better than here, though. :-) She's not going to take her car, at least not right off. It's got high mileage on it, and doesn't need 2k miles each way put on it every time she comes home. She might end up buying a bike. There's a mall 2 miles away, which is walkable, if necessary.

Walking on LI is damned near impossible. Seriously, there are no curbs and it's even illegal on the LIE and most of the turnpikes. Since it's a university though, there might be some buses and things. Then again, most likely she won't need to get around very far or very much, there's strip malls and stores everywhere and if I remember correctly Hofstra has a campus with most necessities on it.

It probably does. Most likely, too, she'll make friends with other students who do have cars for when it's necessary. And, if it comes down to it, she'll take her car back in January. It's just that two or three day drive from here to there that's a bitch. ;-)

Do they still have Pell grants?
