Buses and Shank's Mare

May 03, 2009 23:30

So the kid and I walked to the grocery store this afternoon. It was the close one, but it's still a bit of a stretch for me at my current state of fitness. The plan was to walk there, then hop the bus for the trip home ( Read more... )

I think the moral of this story is that I really do need to get more walking done.

Or double check the bus schedule / day before repeating this again... ;-)

And I can totally empathize with the whole need more exercise thing. Sundays kill me in the evenings because I do my laundry on Sunday night and the machines are in the basement of our building and I'm on the 2nd floor and it's three flights of good stairs and then the rickety 'to the basement' stairs after that... with a full laundry basket...

I refused to even consider an apartment without washer/dryer connections. The fact that I *had* a washer/dryer probably didn't hurt. ;-)

We supply our own machines (the roomie already them when I moved in), but the hook-ups for each apartment are in the basement... *sigh*

I miss my apartment I had my senior year of college. It was this set up where you had your own room and bathroom with it's own lock / key and then you shared a living room and kitchen area with up to 3 others because there were 4 bedrooms/baths per apartment. We had our washer/dryer (provided in our rent) in a little closet area tucked away in the kitchen... it was lovely. I miss that apartment. Plus, I was on the ground floor.

I don't however miss the people who lived above us because I swear they turned the entrance hallway in the apartment into a bowling alley. We would hear something heavy roll from one end of the ceiling to the other and then there would be a bang.

My washer/dryer connections are in the kitchen. I use the top of my dryer as an extension of the counter top and the top of the washer is just one of the places the cats hang out. (Course, there's the cat who thinks he's a toaster cozy, even though he's officially outgrown the top of the four slice toaster.)

LOL!!! I do love that icon. Course, I don't *go* to Walmart unless I have no other choice. I really, really hate Walmart. :-)

I think the moral of your story is more that you need to check the bus schedule! :P Our run slow on Sundays/holidays too. The one to my house only goes every half hour, which, compared to yours, sounds super-speedy now!

Houston's a car city. Definitely a car city. Change is happening, but it's slow.

Oh, yeah. I'm trying to do it at least once a week. More, if possible. I'll still drive when there are heavy things to get, or frozen stuff, but I'm trying to make sure I get all that in one trip.

I'm still getting used to being so unfit. This kind of walk never used to be a problem before I had to stop walking much for close to two years. Amazing how fast things can go down hill. I used to think nothing of doing five miles in all kinds of weather without needing to carry water.

An insulated bag is a good idea. Factoring one into the budget is another matter. :-)

I can probably find one at Whole Foods (which is *NOT* walking distance away ;-).
