Jilly,

I am still on the defensive front today. The volunteers helping me with the cannons are doing better since I've been drilling them, though I am glad this is not the navy and there are many other options when it comes to confronting the enemy. All is not lost, however--I found a petty officer who understands warfare on the first day and rated her ship's gunner, so to speak. It's a step up. The volunteers are brave, hard workers who follow orders, and I cannot ask for better under the circumstances.

I have not heard you speak of this man named Christy, but it heartens me to have his book to look forward to.

Everyone is unharmed as of this letter.

Archie

[that gets a sigh of relief. Another day safely passed]

Archie,

Christy is Geordie's brother. I've mentioned Geordie, right? He's the fiddler. Christy collects stories. And writes them, sometimes, but most of what he puts on the page are things he's seen or heard from people he knows. You might find it interesting. [especially since the things he's seen were rather...fantastic in nature]

Has there been a lot of fighting where you're at? If the volunteers around you need training, I hope there's very little of it until [things were safer? surer?] they've had time to learn.

Jilly,

There is occasional fighting, but not as much as the offensive parties see, since we are not actively seeking battle. Mister Giles is doing extremely well for a man half-blind.

It isn't long before we'll all be home. I think I'll sleep for a week when I come back. The mosquitoes here could eat your arm off.

Archie,

Giles is fighting? [she wants to say that it isn't right, but none of this is...and she has to assume that it's Giles's own choice.

She doesn't have to like it, though]

I think you'll have earned a week of sleep, or more if you want it. [a pause before she continues writing] How far out from the barrier do you think you are? We have all sorts of trees here in this forest, but not a rain forest. That's a completely different climate. It seems like you'd have to be a long ways away to be in such a different place.

How are they transporting everyone?

Jilly

[Since Archie and McCoy and Buffy and Ginko'd left, Sayo had been sitting around anticipating their return-though her mind could not comprehend anything other than just that; death is a mysterious, foreign thing she's yet to learn.

But regardless, she waits. Learns more, where she can't learn from them. But she's at least happy to have Jilly around, and when she the offer for icecream emerges she paces through the living room with her journal-weird, weird book it is-to Jilly.

... partly out of breath.]

You wanted to get something?

[She can't even remember what it was, but she was just happy enough to get it.]

[a bright smile] Ice cream. It's something to eat.

Have you had it before?

[she shakes her head]

I haven't! I'd like to try it, though. Is it good food?

[a smile] Very good. It's really sweet. And cold, so that makes it perfect on a warm day.

[Wally is just wandering around bored out of his skull trying to find something, anything, to do when he spots a couple of shoes under a tree and wanders over to investigate. Brilliant forensics detective (kind of) that he is, he immediately concludes that either they came from someone in the tree or that someone is looking for them. Since it's not like people get yanked into the sky leaving only their shoes behind.

...he really hopes anyway.

A quick check gives him his answer, and he grins up at the girl sitting above him.]

I thought normally people rescued cats from trees?

[glancing up or would that be down? from her book, she grins, waving it a little] Books are a close second, so I hear.

They get stuck in trees now? Man, and I thought this place was weird enough already.

You've got to watch out for these things. You never know what you'll find.

[and she'll smile, eyes crinkling slightly] I'm Jilly, by the way. To maybe lessen the awkward of talking down at you.

[Mildmay has taken to taking walks. If he avoids people, he gets exercise for his leg and doesn't become a total hermit homebody it's a no loose situation... until he's about to trip over someone's discarded shoes.]

[It's unusual to kidnap someone and leave their shoes. Mildmay takes a minute to study them, trying to think about what could be going on, before...]

[He takes a step back and looks up, cringing slightly in hopes he isn't about to stare up some poor lady's skirt.]

[lucky for him, it's something of a minor miracle for Jilly to wear a skirt. Instead, she's in jeans and a baggy sweater that is probably much too warm for the season, though she seems comfortable enough huddled up in the branches.

She does a look a bit startled though, followed by apologetic as the tripping catches her attention.

Biting her lip as she peers over the pages of her book] Oh...god. I'm sorry! Are you okay?

[Shrug.] 'M fine. D'you loose something? [He picks up one shoe and holds it up for her to see.]

[that gets a small smile] It's just easier to climb without them. And I figured they wouldn't wander too far on their own.

[a beat] I wasn't really thinking about tripping hazards, though.
