There is no spirit to this place.

That seems wrong, though....how can a place be without any sort of spirit at all?

[it almost feels like it'd have to be dead for that...and that's a terrifying thought. Because what could kill a spirit?

Maybe this world wasn't built in a way such that it could have one.

You think this place was built, then? It isn't just another planet or world?

Not built in that sense. Worlds are constructed differently. Some worlds have magic and some don't. Some have gods that walk among mortals, and others don't have gods at all. Some have creatures that others don't have. Some give everyone wings. Whether worlds even came to be that way or were made that way probably also varies.

I guess that makes sense...but it seems like there'd have to be at least some common threads through all of them. I mean...there's got to be some kind of connection if we're all here now, right?

Maybe. But that isn't it.

How can you be sure?

I have ways of finding out these things.

[arching an eyebrow at that...not that he can see it]

Care to share with the rest of the class?

Hee hee, of course not. That would be telling.

So I should just take your word for it? That seems awfully lazy on my part.

You're free to not listen to me, but what sort of person would I be to force you to look when I already know the answer to your question?

[she doesn't know him. Not for more than the few passing times they've met. But she's remembering this style of conversation, now.

Actually, it's rather familiar. The kind of roundabout conversations she could have with Joe when he was feeling the most disconnected and wild. Definitely inhuman]

And what kind of person would I be if I gave up just because someone told me to?

I'm not telling you to. But don't be disappointed when it turns out to not exist.

I doubt I will be.

That's not exactly the kind of search that you come back from empty handed...even if it's not what you were expecting.
