Also, your statement about sphinxes gazing into each other's eyes in the sunlight somehow got me thinking about them gazing directly at the sun, and that feels like it should be part of some story.
There may be a story there, but I'm not the one to tell it--the horror of gazing directly at the sun is too frightening to me to write about, even for invulnerable statues! It's like running with scissors, something I was taught not to do by means of awful stories. There's a poem in one or another of these statues, for me, if I can ever write it.
