THE ANONYMOUS FEEDBACK MEME
Ever wonder if people are holding back from telling you what they really think of your writing?

It’s often hard to leave feedback in a public forum without censoring ourselves, or being afraid of offending somebody.

Here you can share the love, or air your true opinions without that pesky face-to-face (or ah, username-to- ( Read more... )

You write like yourself. This is not a problem when you do original characters, but is with your fanfiction - you constantly place your own opinions, ideas, and beliefs in the minds of others that do not share them ( ... )

I completely agree with this - also, you are good writer, but not nearly as good as you *think* you are, and that is one of your biggest hurdles :/

You're a cunt, and I love you for it. Your writing is harsh and brutal, But sometimes that's not enough. Sometimes you need more.

I agree that you have completely replaced canon with your own fanon in your view of the shows, and your fic absolutely suffers for it. Your characterization is often poor, although it does tend to ring true in less plot- or introspection-driven fics. You write a hot Cameron/Stacy, but imbue the idea with absolutely zero credibility. Your bitchy attitude in fic-comms and your bizarre character-hate don't do much to mitigate the failings of your writing.

Your insistence on inserting Ianto-hate in your Torchwood fic is ridiculous, btw. It makes you just as bad as the writers who have Jack gleefully humiliating Gwen time and time again. Stop replacing canon characterization and actions with your own hate-on - it'll make you a better writer.

Agrees on much of the depth of character aspects - and for many of the same reasons - I'd like you to let them show themselves a LOT more often instead of using them as puppets.

Also?
Your Jack/Ianto shippers will hate this 'warning' is often just not necessary, at all.

IAWTC. Even when it is required, it just comes off as hugely bitchy and makes me want to scroll on by.

Your writing is amazing and you deserve all the praise you get. The majority of the people who are criticizing you are just pissy because you write the characters with harsh realism, instead of the Ianto/Jack puppylove bullshit that most TW fans are so set on pretending is canon.

Dismissing criticism is exactly why people don't get better at writing. The saccharine ~*~true-love~*~ fuckery that is rampant in TW and J/I fandom blows, but that doesn't mean that every single interpretation of "harsh realism" is going to ring true. For example, Jack torturing his team members? IDC that it's Ianto, I think something like that requires a lot more skill or attention to pull off then karaokegal gives it. Just subsituting in your authorial hate for a character or situation doesn't mean that the characterization is going to ring true.

I don't deny my loathing of the character, and the pairing, but I think if you read the fic itself as opposed to the TW-Babble and various discussions that Ianto is generally a more sympathetic, if sometimes bitter character, whereas Jack tends to come off as a bastard, mostly for being exactly who is. (See Clouds In My Coffee and Show-Off)

I've also written fic where Ianto gets some of his own back by having other affairs. (No Harm, for instance.)

Jack isn't torturing Ianto because he hates him, but out of his own desperate need and broken-ness. I realize it's a dark!fic and perhaps a stretch, but not necessarily a representation of Ianto-hate, except for the fact that timing is everything, but that's canon's fault, not mine.

By rights, it probably should have been Gwen, but canon didn't suggest that.

Using your own work to rebuff criticism about it does not make for a good argument. You continue to state the position that others are calling into question without admitting any room for error, which is exactly the problem that others are bringing up. You do not allow yourself any chance to admit having been wrong, which has you come across as needy and whiny. Even in calling your own work in for support, you do not reference anything specific, or quote any passages that would prove your case.

Claiming that canon is supporting you s a way to avoid blame and responsibility for what you have written, and by extension, prevent yourself from taking any of the criticism which has been given.

See? This is exactly what people are saying is wrong with your writing and attitude. I did read your fic, and I tried to go into it with an open mind, dismissed from my general dislike of your comm behavior. But you still have characterization problems. Not just with Ianto, but with Jack and Gwen.

LOL IT'S A STRETCH. Trust me, I know what you were trying to do - I'm just saying you did not succeed.

Try and step back from your ego - you're not a bad writer, but you're not good enough that you can handwave your problems away.

I didn't say that it rang true every time, and I wrote my comment about karaokegirl's work before reading the J/I torture fic. She's my favourite fandom author, but that wasn't as strong of a story as her others, in my opinion.

Nor did I say that none of the criticisms she's getting here are valid-- just that I feel that most of them are from angry Janto fangirls. I could definitely be wrong about that since this is anon, so no one knows who is commenting, though. *shrug*

Personally, I'm just a bitter fan and like seeing Ianto getting treated like shit for a change, because it happens so often to Gwen, whom I love and adore. Karaokegirl's fics are a breath of fresh air to me.

just that I feel that most of them are from angry Janto fangirls.

If these are angry "Janto" fangirls, then they are far more literate and openminded than their reputation would suggest, *lol*

That assertion is just as questionable as the twats who say kgal doesn't like J/I because she is "homophobic." That's a good joke.

Just curious, though - wouldn't you rather read a fic with a good, strong Gwen to a fic that treats Ianto like shit? I don't see why it must be a zero sum game.

As for me, the more J/I/G the better. J optional. ;)
