You cannot differentiate your own fanon from what is on the screen or the printed page, and your work suffers for that because you do not allow yourself to be challenged or to chage your mind. You take your own point of view and try to impose that on the characters you work with, which has them come off as unrealistic and unlike themselves, engaging in behaviors they would not consider otherwise.
When you drop your background and do your best to get inside the heads of those you write about, and consider the world from their point of view and go from there - the point of view the characters would have developed over their life, as opposed to the point of view you would like them to have - then your work shines and displays a very dark, sharp edge that is not seen too often. The key seems to be avoiding putting yourself into who you write about.
A good deal of advice novice writers recieve revolves around the notion of letting the characters talk, and following them along. Remember that, and it should help.
