The Trickster would have him believe it's his love for Dean. That may or may not be true. I think his expediency is his fatal flaw. Sam is very ends justify the means, and when he's acting on bad information, he does bad and stupid things.

♥ Sam's a ball of contradictions, because Sam's very ends justify the means, but he's also very compassionate. It's why I say he's very like Tim and Bruce. The compassion's there and it tends to be a strong motivating factor, but how he deals with it is very very much expediency.
