I'm thinking laptop, but my dad thinks that if I get a desktop i will get more bang for the buck. but thats the cost of convenience for the laptop. also, if i do indeed end up taking a laptop, ( Read more... )

hey matt!

i got an iBook for college & i LOVE it. its everything i need, & it's so convenient. it was less than 2000, so i think it was worth every penny. i am never buying a PC again. ever.

go to best buy or someplace like that [i went to MacEdge in nashua] & talk to them. tell them what you need, & they'll tell you what's best for you. for example, i could have gotten a powerbook, but why pay almost twice as much when i can have power like that from a desktop computer less than half that? plus, if you need a powerful machine, there are always computers all over campus.
think about it, fellow to-be-Marylander!

best of luck with all your computer shopping,
steph

i think it is close to the metro, like a block or two away. we're also right next to the light rail, although i'm not sure whether or not it goes to DC. i'll definitely be in DC more than once; i have a friend from bethesda there.

when are you going down to dc, anyway?

am i innnn college? no. but everyone i've seen / visited who has a desktop and it is a good time. plus you'll probably never take it out very much, and it will be less likely to be lost or stolen if its a big ol' thing.

personally i loooooooove. LOVE. my sony vaio, so if you're going for a brand new desktop, totes look into that.

good luck!!

its true i probably wouldn't take it out very much. but the campus is wireless, so if i wanted to it would be easier. but getting a desktop is something im seriously concidering at this point.

Dont listen to steff. she's an artist, mac her way to go.
What you want is a Dell Notebook Computer with at least 2.4ghz processing speed, 60gig hard drive, and at least 1,024 meg of RAM... You'll also want a DVD and a floppy drive. We can order you one off lune is you like.
You esp, at a political school, with a polysci major and a wireless campus will want the notebook, with a wireless port. Do not build in the wireless card, but buy one. You'll want the mobility for research, meetings, classes perhaps, and of course caucus sessions.
You'll want the windows OS because it's most popular, and compatible with anyone you may need to transfer data with.

I'm here if you want more info. And you know I'm your man for this.

right now my dad's laptop has 1.2 GHz, 40gig hard drive space, and 256MB of RAM.

seems fine for now. but also a far cry from what you reccoment.AU reccomends at least 1.6 GHz, 40gig hard drive and 512 MB of RAM. how much of a difference does it make with the extra specs that you reccomend?

thanks for the reply!

Matt

p.s. I'm partial to macs myself, but if i were to buy a notebook, it probably wouldn't be a mac due to it's higher price.

The extra gigahertz allows the computer to think faster... the RAM allows it to think about more, and better. the extra Gigabytes allows it to store more things (files, music games, movies, etc etc). The GHZ is very important... My betty had a 2.4 GHZ, and it made me cry sometimes how slow she was... Also we should try for a pentium 4 if possible...

It all depends on how much you're looking to spend.. what's your budget cap?

budget cap is probably somewhere around 1000.
i found a compaq notebook pent 4 2.8 GHz, 512 RAM, 60GB for $1090....
but then again, i may not be playing the high matinence graphic games that you do.

definately go for the laptop, with a wireless internet card installed. my laptop is on wi-fi in my house and i couldnt have it any other way, so you can imagine how advantageous it is in the real world. not to mention that in a few years everything is going to be wireless, so you might as well jump on the boat now,

in the words of steve, the pot-smoking representative of what every American teen should be:

"dude, you're getting a dell."

i have a dell desktop and i LOVE it. the first one we bought kept crashing, so we sent it back and they gave us a new one for free... their customer service is superb, and you can do just about anything on this computer.

PS- i want to hear about your time as a DNC volunteer! any good (liberal) people that you met?
