So it's 10:00, and I'm guessing we're not making the annual Thanksgiving Eve pilgrimage to the town where I grew up. See, every year the scattered members of my dad's generation (none of whom have regular names--they go by things like Moose and Duck and Bear and Ref) get together at the local Irish-ish bar and have a few drinks and tell stories ( Read more... )

i are serious adult, geekiness, nostalgia

I didn't get them all at once! They just sort of...accumulated...over a couple of years. ;)

Aw, I am not that awesome--just less lame than I used to be. ;)

And you are awesome, you know--how many papers did you write last week? XD That translates to awesomeness, right there.

It's more of... sometimes I'm kind of embarrassed to be a geek? And sometimes I wish I wasn't. As embarrassed, I mean. People around here are stupidly judgmental and I feel self-conscious about my geekiness when it comes to things like dating or even talking to the opposite sex. Or, anyone, really. I feel like I'm the only one who has to sort of lie about their hobbies. "Oh me? I... write." "Write what?" "...Stuff."

...Yeah. Okay. So there's my big confession. ;) *waits to be flogged by your f-list* I wish I was self-confident enough to either wear my geekiness with pride (metaphorically since I'm not into t-shirts), or at least not feel like it makes me unattractive in some way to admit I do things like write fanfic and roleplay. I don't even know if any of this is making sense?

So to me, you being confident/proud enough to admit you're geeky means you're awesome.

"Write what?" "...Stuff."

To be honest, that's usually how I respond to that sort of question. Just because I love being a geek does not mean that I'll spend twenty minutes trying to explain fandom to my coworkers.

I'm not in the geeky closet, I'm in, let's say, the geeky pantry--sure, it's a little cramped, and I don't go out of my way to invite people inside, but there's lots of stuff to eat and I'm not embarrassed to venture out into the kitchen of reality and microwave stuff.

...Oookay, I am not allowed to metaphor after 2am anymore.

And why would there be flogging here? We don't do that unless people like that sort of thing. XD

Like I said, I was totally unconfident in my geekery for a really long time--it's only in the past couple of years that I've kind of found my footing as both a human being and a nerd. I know you will, too. :)

Every geek needs to wear their geekness with pride, like how I'm going to wear my home-made Futurama t-shirt with pride once I finish it. XD

Yay! Home-made shirts are extra geeky. You get massive respect for that endeavor. XD

Hehehe. There's nothing quite as awesome as loving being a geek.
