omg we're making monkey munch *om nom nom*

So it's 10:00, and I'm guessing we're not making the annual Thanksgiving Eve pilgrimage to the town where I grew up. See, every year the scattered members of my dad's generation (none of whom have regular names--they go by things like Moose and Duck and Bear and Ref) get together at the local Irish-ish bar and have a few drinks and tell stories that I'm not supposed to hear. (For example, my dad's drinking stories always start "When I was sixteen--er, eighteen--er, twenty one!") Used to be it was just an excuse for us kids to play pinball for hours and hours with an endless supply of quarters from our increasingly intoxicated parental units.

But over the last couple of years, people my age have started showing up--classmates from my Catholic school days. Now, I don't have a whole lot of friends from that era. I was the mousy nerd who read Star Wars novels at lunch and always wound up on the fringes of any recess-time conversations. All of which kind of makes me wonder why I had wanted to go in the first place.

But then I realized: I want to show off.

Because I am not that mousy girl anymore. Yeah, I still read Star Wars books at lunch, and I still use obnoxiously oversized words, and if you run up to me and go "OMG SARAH HOW DO YOU SPELL THIS" I will still just blink and spell it for you. But I own it now. I'm not embarrassed by being the geek in the back of the room (or the front of the room--eyesight for the lose). I love bad punning and Harry Potter quotes. I love learning words, and pwning Warcraft beasts. Boom-de-yada boom-de-yada. :)

I guess I'm not too disappointed in not going down to the Gaslight tonight. After all, I'll have plenty of time to prance around as the new-old-me this summer...when our eighth-grade class has its ten-year reunion.

...I think I'll dye my hair purple before I go. ;)

i are serious adult, geekiness, nostalgia
