Naturally, Emma knew that Haylie was there. She also had a fairly good idea on just why Haylie was there. It was jarring, really. Charles had always seemed like such a rock; Emma had him on a pedestal, even when she didn't agree with the old man. She'd heard about the school before Haylie even arrived on the Washington grounds. It didn't take much nudging for her to get the answers to some of her questions ( ... )

It had been a long time since the fallout between the two female powerhouses of the X-Men. It was no surprise that Emma and Haylie would go their separate ways because they were polar opposites of ideals. She was north and Emma was south, and Charles had managed to keep them in balance for years. But once Emma's mind was made up to leave the X-Men, not even Charles could've stopped her. And Haylie made her peace with that. Mostly.

There were still the lingering feelings of betrayal and resentment buried deep beneath the feelings of grief, rage, and heart-wrenching pain left over from the attack on the school and the loss of her fellow teammates and students. Haylie was always firmly on the side of negotiation before violence, like her mentor, but this latest incident was testing those beliefs to the very core.

Which happened to be the train of thought Haylie was pursuing when she stumbled upon a familiar face mutilating dandelions. Muscles tensing briefly, Haylie stopped in front of Emma and let out a deep breath before speaking.

She didn't have to look up to recognise the voice, it wasn't exactly like she was prone to forgetting things. Still, she looked up to acknowledge Haylie at least. "Haylie."

Her tone wasn't exactly welcoming, but it wasn't as cold as it could get. They'd been friends, somewhat, a while ago. But people changed and ideals morphed and Emma's logger heads with Charles had impacted a lot of things. One of them being the separation from all those at the mansion that she would've called family -including Charles.

Emma understood having your beliefs tested, Emma understood questioning the teaching of a man you came to look at as a mentor, as a father. She'd been pushed through them herself, and when she came out, she was more suited to the MRE's ideals than Charles'.
