This is not sucking up; really. [open, but nudge Emma]

Lorna knew she was a good few days late, but the shipping company had apologised and maybe it would be more of a surprise for Emma if she was late. Still, standing just outside the mess hall, holding a carefully wrapped parcel in her hands and biting her lower lip, Lorna was pretty sure she look the epitome of edgy ( Read more... )

Emma's birthday had come and gone with little fuss. She got her usual card from her sister -which was to say it was sent to her home and then forwarded to her on the base, and Sebastian had sent ahead a little joke, once more asking when Emma planned on giving up the little farce and rejoining their ranks. She had yet to call Sebastian back.

Approaching the mess hall, with work still on her mind, Emma hadn't exactly planned on sticking around the mess. But the shock of green hair told her Lorna was standing there, and Emma indulged in a brief smile.

Until she got close enough to see that Lorna was holding a wrapped present. Oh, dear. "Lorna, dearest, what is that?" Contrary to popular belief, Emma did not like a song and dance, least of all about her birthday.

"It's yours, a present." She practically thrust it out towards Emma, smiling in that way that was half nerves and half hope. Lorna at least knew that Emma wasn't exactly one for overblown gestures; there were no streamers or cake or a party. Lorna wasn't that stupid.

But the simple little gift, that was what Lorna devised, and at least it would show Emma that Lorna was still 'hers' in a way. She wasn't about to believe that Emma had her brought here just because she'd gotten out of prison a little rough around the edges, undoubtedly, Lorna was there because Emma needed help figuring out what was going on where she couldn't see.

"It's nothing big, just a little thing, you now, to say happy birthday." It was a pretty silver necklace with a bracelet to match. Lorna had gone for simple but tasteful and elegant at the same time. She figured Emma would appreciate it more.

Taking the parcel, Emma inclined her head inside, slipping into the mess and grateful for it being moderately quiet. Untying the bow and then slipping the paper separated carefully -Emma was not the sort to simply rip into a gift, not with the effort Lorna had put into the presentation. The jewellery boxes were opened after that and Emma smiled a genuine smile at her protégé.

"Lorna, darling, thank you." The necklace and bracelet were exactly her style; without being too flashy but tasteful and with enough of a value that she would be content wearing them. "You really didn't have to."

And she didn't, and Lorna probably knew that she didn't, but the fact that she did was a sort of buzz anyway. Emma knew that Lorna was very much her girl when it came to the base, in fact the green haired magnetism manipulator was probably the only person on the base who genuinely liked Emma anyway. "How have you been? Was your training with Sykes comfortable?"
