the desert rose in bloom (locked to spikyflyboy)

It came about as she was in the middle of training with Wade. Emma wanted to see Haylie in her office, and when she got there, Worth was waiting. An hour later, they were on a plane to Nevada on some hush hush recovery mission with orders to limit the body count, not get caught, and bring back some special plane ( Read more... )

Since he'd been called in on a brief with Miss Frost, the plans and details she had for the covert ops air craft laid out while she questioned if he could fly it [it was a glorified Learjet, truth be told, and those were like riding a bike after you got into a Raptor] before calling in his team mate for this assignment. A friendly face was appreciated in the regard ( ... )

The biggest issue, as far as Jane could imagine, would be getting the so called special plane out of the compound. If they were meant to go the softly-softly approach it wasn't like they could napalm the place and hope for the best.

Not that he would, it was just an option. Or wasn't an option.

"So, we are meant to get in there, and find this plane and get out. With no casualties." It was doable, sure, probably. But it was probably going to get majorly fucked along the way. "I can point out so many flaws with this plan." For one thing, the drop point was all wrong, for another they were so totally out numbered.

"Shall we?"

Haylie was beginning to think Emma cooked this up just to piss her off. Revenge for their time living together? Or just because she could? She had to resist the urge to bang her head against the rocks in frustration. She'd only been on one other mission and that in itself had been a clusterfuck. Apparently no one knew what a successful mission looked like.

"We're better off just waltzin' on in there and tryin' to convince them we're Jehovah's Witnesses." Haylie snarked, rolling her eyes and shifting to climb over the side of the ridge.

Jane wasn't sure if maybe this was the intention all along; instead of discharging him for being a mutant they'd just sent him to a team that didn't know it's ass from it's elbow and now he was more likely to die on a run of the mile snack and grab rather than those suicide runs in 'Stan that he'd always, somehow, managed to make it back from.

"Well," giving her the once over before looking down at himself, Jane shrugged, "I'm dressed for Jehovah's canvassing, you, not so much." Following her over the side of the ridge, Jane looked for any kind of cover they could use. "Head down there, that looks to be a lower running valley."

At the very least, they'd move in as close as possible before they needed to head into the open. "You can run fast, right?"

Haylie couldn't help but laugh as Jane said she didn't look like a Jehovah's Witness, biting back the urge to snark back that he was the one who looked like a skinny Rambo. Instead, she just shook her head and began climbing down the side of the ridge more, making the occasional extra footholds for Jane with some of the energy from her hands.

"Jesus, y'think they'd sign us up for some rock-climbin' lessons or somethin' before just droppin' us off in the middle of nowhere." She griped about halfway down, finally lifting her head to cast a look similar to the ones she usually gave Wade up at Jane in response to his question.

"I didn't get these legs by walkin', Worth."

He would protest the 'skinny' part of that, he was not a skinny anything.

When they made it to the bottom of the ridge, Jane took point in front of Haylie. Sure, she could handle herself no doubt, but Jane preferred to make sure there wasn't anything out of the ordinary -he was the one with military training and the gear.

"Well, we'll probably need to move quick to cover the ground." He doesn't like the space between their cover and the building, but it wasn't as if he really had a choice.

"Lead the way, Lieutenant." She replied as they hit the ground, falling in behind Jane and glancing around as they moved. Haylie was putting herself in charge of keeping an eye out for any surprises while Jane took point.
