Nice day for a walk in the park - OTA

Feb 26, 2010 21:41

The lab Katie worked in had neither windows or clocks, just smooth concrete walls all around. Although she normally welcomed the way the lack of visual interest forced her to focus, she tended to lose her sense of time. Mornings, afternoons and evenings bled together into a solid blur of work- regular mealtimes rarely took priority in her world- ( Read more... )

Victor blinked as his eyes adjusted to the bright sunlight reflecting off the pale snow. Well, it was bright to him, having been cooped up inside for so long. Having been kept under careful watch inside for weeks, he was being allowed a brief reprieve to step outside for a few moments, although Stryker's MPs were under orders to keep a close eye on him. The feral squinted as he caught sight of the young woman standing a short distance away, and he recognised her as the one he'd spoken to recently, one of the new arrivals. He still hadn't discovered what her mutation was yet. He moved closer - slowly, so as to make sure h didn't appear as a threat and have the MPs come running - and began to talk.

"You're the new girl, huh?"

Katie heard the sound of footsteps through the snow, opening her eyes to see the swarm of MPs and the man slinking towards her slowly. When he spoke, she gave a little dramatic sigh, and said "Yeah, I am. How long does it take to become not new?"

Resuming her leaning position against the wall, though shifting further away from Victor, she glanced towards the MPs watching them suspiciously. Remembering back to their first meeting, she asked "Do you always have an entourage?"

"Yeah, they're my groupies." His tone of voice was weary rather than irritated. By now, he'd started to get used to constantly being watched, although it still made him bristle; he'd managed to somehow turn the whole thing into some kind of game in his mind instead, trying to keep the MPs on their toes. "Just don't go askin' for an autograph."

He moved to lean against the wall nearby, close enough to speak, but not so much so that it would be regarded as a threat. He crossed his arms over his chest and looked at her.

"You survive longer'n a month, an' maybe you're on your way to becomin' permanent."

Katie appreciated the fact that Victor kept his distance from her, but acknowledged that it probably had more to do with the MPs than any wish to respect her personal space.

When he spoke, she looked at him with a vague sense of disbelief. "Is not surviving a possibility?" She asked tentatively. She assumed it was a joke, but he seemed so damn serious.

Ty was out walking. He had been cooped up in his room for far too long, a self imposed isolation though it was. It was just his personality, he preferred his own company to that of others. But he did enjoy the outdoors. There was a wild sort of loneliness that nature seemed to possess, whether the arid desert of his home or the icy snow of Russia. It was something he identified with.

Reluctant to head back inside, but having no to reason to stay outdoors, Ty stood in the snow, face indescisive. His ears picked the sound of slow, steady breathing, the kind that a person heading towards slumber might make. Head swiveling as he caught the noise, he made his way over to the wall of the compound. Right hand clutching his ever-present walking stick, he waited a moment before speaking. "You'll freeze if you fall asleep out here."

The sound of crunching snow registered in the back of Katie's mind in an untroubled way, so the sudden voice startled her out of her doze. Starting, she flicked her body around to see Ty.

"I wasn't sleeping," Katie defended herself automatically. "I was just... yeah. Sleeping." She conceded defeat, studying Ty as she brushed snow sheepishly off of her jacket. The cane confused her- it was a military base, did he really have a physical handicap?- until she saw that his eyes, pale and deep, didn't quite focus on her.

Ty, although not one much for laughing, chuckled quietly as Katie made her excuses, a small smile on his face. That answer really was just too cute. "I could come back later, and wake you when you're resembling a snowman?"

He hadn't met this one before, but the same could be said for most of the camp. Ty brushed a few stray strands of hair out of his face. "I don't believe we've met. I'm Ty, or Sensory."

Katie giggled softly, letting out a breath in a puff that swirled in front of her. "I think I'd get lost under the snow," she said.

"I'm Katie," she said with a smile, stuffing her hands into her pockets to keep from offering him a handshake. "No code name, though."
