I graduated with a double major, English and Polish and I've been out of work for well over a year. I live in Michigan, which has the worst economy of all the states, so I count that into my reasons why I still dont' have a job. All I can tell you is to keep trying, keep making that resume pretty, and try not to let it get you down. Also, to get interviews for part-time work, I leave my college education out of it. It's dishonest, but there's something about the BACHELOR OF ARTS that repels stores and restaurants. I think it's because they feel obligated to pay you more, so they just don't even bother.
I'm going to attempt to solve this thing by leaving everything behind and moving to a state with a better economy, joining a temp agency, and praying for the best.
Just a note of interest...I live in Minneapolis and Hennepin county is often looking for interpreters who speak all sorts of languages. It pays well--$25/hour. Also Substitute teachers are needed here--$100/day. Just a thought because then your education is needed. There's also several places that proctor exams here and need graders.
If you decide you want to come out this way I'll certainly help out where I can. I know the city well--where it's fun and safe and whatnot. Even if you just wanted to visit for a weekend. We are friendly and have a sleeper sofa if you aren't fearful/allergic of cats and dogs and turtles.
I've got the same problem. Recent graduate from Psych, coming up on a year with no employment (august marks a year). I couldn't find anything in the city I was living in when I graduated so I moved to Baltimore with my girlfriend for her grad school. I've put in roughly 100-150 apps in the past month an a half I've been here, and I've gotten one interview at a place that does regular interval interviews, and I'm still waiting to hear something from them. I can't even get a job as a filing clerk. It gets me down, and I'm very scared by it. But, I try not to let it get to me and just keep applying.
I'm in the same boat.. 29 and with a BA in English that I seemingly can't really use to get a job. I am going to meet with my local employment and training office because this is insane, and I need steady FT work if I can get it.
Are you doing something wrong? Well.. I must say that if you are not checking out the NYC Craigslist, you're missing out on some decent opportunities. The Non-profit and Education sections of the jobs category is chock full of things you might want to look at.
Also my friend's sister works on Broadway, and it appears theatre ushers are probably needed for something.. consider looking into it.
Craigslist hasn't proved all that fruitful for me, actually. I do comb it daily, but I've had better luck with other sites. A lot of the ads there are not from reputable places, especially in my primary field (editorial). I worked editorial/proofreading in my internship, and many of the ads there are from start-up magazines or publications that can't afford to pay or can't afford to pay full time. I'm doing the freelance thing already, so it's not really helpful

Which temp agency did you use and what kind of work and what not did they give you?
I've never used one and I'm not even sure how they work or what not. I've just been looking for PT/FT in ads and on job sites and in store windows and such.
I used these people (http://www.pnp-inc.com/1.asp), and they got me a temp job at the Boys and Girls Club that pays $14 an hour. It bores me to tears, but money is money.

Have you tried looking into temp agencies? That's how I found a temp job in Manhattan.
