Newbie!

Hey everyone. I just recently discovered this community and think it's brilliant (except for the fact that we're unemployed.. of course!). I graduated from college in May. Then proceeded to fall flat on my face as far as job hunting goes. Because frankly, there are no jobs. Then after a month or so I finally found a cashiering gig (but only through ( Read more... )

Hi hi, another one from the class of 2009 here, working retail and actually... kind of enjoying it, in some ways. I get to meet all kinds of interesting people, and if they yell at me I can just press the supervisor button and let someone else deal with the pissed offness. Never wanted a graduate job with all that responsibility and stupid long hours, but something admin/secretarial and above min wage would be nice. Unfortunately in direct competition with everyone who got made redundant over the last year and have years of experience. Ah well.

Maybe having a couple of part-time jobs rather than One True Career is the way forward? A sizeable number of my friends are doing this, making a living and not going crazy from too much cashiering. I do 12 hours of supermarket cashiering, plus occasional exam invigilation in high schools and I just got another job as a museum attendant. Trouble is it's hard to get fixed hours out of those kinds of jobs.

Anyway, wishing you much good luck, economy sucks at the moment and we're all doing our

Hurrah 09! lol. I'm envious of people like you that can actually enjoy cashiering. If I'd liked it even a little bit I might've been able to stick it out. But I was just in a really bad location too, so that probably had some effect. Meh. Most of my friends are doing the same thing too! I can only hope that we're all heading in the right direction somehow. =) Now, if only I can find some kind of new job... Hmm, lol. Darn economy.

I won't be saying it's enjoyable when I have to get up stupidly early tomorrow morning. >_< Or when something explodes/drips on my conveyor belt. But is slightly above min wage and the customers are generally not bastardly, so not too bad generally. Couldn't do it 40hrs/week, though. Mind-numbing.

Ahhh, yes. I think location plays a big role. Most of our customers were half crazed and spoke a different language. I've also learned that meat is kind of gross (at least when you're a cashier) if it comes from anywhere but the Deli. I got paid barely above minimum and my mind was going numb. Definitely not worth it.

Welcome! Yet another 2009 grad (math and French) who still doesn't have a job. I can't even get a retail job, though, and that's not for lack of trying.

<3 2009. I feel like we got so screwed, haha. Yeah, it took me forever to find even that ONE cashiering job that I hated =/ It's not easy. I hope you find something soon though! <3

Our class did get screwed. Part of me wants to write to my college's career planning office and ask about that six-month checkup email they sent my class around November. "So how many of us are unemployed? What's our liberal arts degree good for again?"

Good luck to you too!

Oh man!! My school did the same thing, kinda. They kept harassing all the new graduates about this survey asking what we were doing with our lives now. I didn't even bother. I was like, what? Do you really want me to tell you that all I could get with my degree was a job cashiering at a local supermarket? I don't think so. I'm sure at least half the class felt the same way, haha. Thanks! =)

Welcome to the same boat I'm in. I graduated in June 2005. Have barely had a job, period, let alone a job in my field (Enviro engineering). Welcome to the great lie. "If you want a good job you have to go to college".
