What are you looking for?

Question for everyone: Do you still look for jobs that are your specialty / in your field of skills / dream job? OR do you just try and find "something"..."anything!!"  to pay the bills while you continue to get into the field of your choice ( Read more... )

Ideally I want to be a professor someday, which I need more education than I have right now. Assuming I get in, I'm planning to go to grad school in fall '10 in a different part of the country, so right now I don't want something permanent. It would be nice to have something I love, but right now all I need is something I can tolerate. I can tolerate most things other than jobs that require heavy lifting (I'm a weakling) or receptionist jobs (I have all the skills for them, but the work just makes me miserable).

As far as after grad school, I can't imagine just settling for a job with good benefits, good pay, etc. Those are the kinds of jobs my father has been holding ever since before I was born, and just seeing what it did to him (he claims he's content with his work, but it's obvious he's not) has made me never, ever want to settle like that. I have enough passions that I'm hoping I'll be able to find a job that accommodates at least one of them, even if being a professor doesn't pan out.

I'm looking for a job that's in my field of skills but meantime doing an admin role that's driving me NUTS and a retail part time role on the side to make ends meet.

A passion driven job is certainly on my radar and I'm so going to keep looking until I find that because at my age I can't be changing jobs again easily...

I still look...right now it seems selfish to still want that dream job, but I'm working on my second degree in my field and all of my professional experience is in said field, so I'm a little lost in this big world of business. It would be a huge disappointment to but forth all that effort into this one goal and never achieve it.

On the other hand, having a comfortable office job where I could work hard but still get decent pay and benefits would be amazing right now. I see so many people with these jobs but I have no idea how to get one.

I'm basically looking in my field as well as connected fields. Although I by now feel like "anything" would do, it's not very likely that I find a job way outside my field where I neither have the skills nor the experience for.

I have applied for the odd job that's not in my field and that you don't need many special skills for, but got to hear then that they don't employ people with college degree there. So this isn't really an option either.

...but boy do I know that drill. Especially the bit about them not employing people with a degree. Last time I was jobhunting (so far, I haven't even had any interviews yet in this round!), I got a lot of "why are you applying for this when you're actually a biologist?" followed by "sorry, not hiring you, we don't want somebody who'll ditch the job as soon as they find something better". It's a bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.
