Cloud Nine - OTA

Nothing could kill her mood. Not the heavy gray clouds in the sky. Not the chill in the air. Not the mud on her boots or PT she had to run. As far as Angel was concerned it was the first day of spring. Ethan's kiss was fresh on her lips. She knew it wasn't likely to happen again any time soon. He wanted to take things slow. And by slow he meant ( Read more... )

It wasn't like Alice wasn't used to being bumped into, busy streets did that to a person, chasing people, slipping through crowds, it was part of her former profession. It had been a while since she'd ever been apologised to however.

On pure reaction, Alice's hand jerked out, freezing her dropped cup instantly; she really was more worried about spilling her coffee than breaking anything, but it was just a habit to flinch outwards. "It's fine." Although her tone was fairly firm, as if preparing to lecture a small child.

"Are you hurt?" It had been a single, petty bump, but it was probably polite to ask before Alice started fussing over her coffee, currently suspended mid fall.

She gasped prepared for hot coffee to hit her when it just stopped falling, frozen in air. Angel's eyes grew wide. "Now, isn't that something? Er, uh I'm sorry. I'm fine. Are you? That's incredible what you did with the coffee. You even stopped all the little drops." Her tone was awed a bit. She could move things with her mind but it wasn't manipulation so much as lifting. She couldn't just make it stop like that.

Staring at the coffee; cup just a little off, drops falling towards the ground, some of the liquid spilling from inside, Alice shrugged a shoulder slightly. "I'm fine, yeah." It was lucky her automatic response was to freeze, had it been the other way around, well, there could've been more than spilled coffee to worry about.

"It's nothing, really." Avoiding the slight spills, Alice took a hold of the cup, still suspended where it was, and shifted to catch the over spilling liquid and place the cup upright, "Watch yourself." As Alice lifted the cup, the droplets that had escaped fell to the ground, everything unfreezing together.

Angel took a step back and watched her save her coffee. "Something like that would really come in handy around me. Unfortunately, I wasn't gifted with much grace. Oh geez, and you're new, aren't you? What a horrible first impression. I'm Angel. I promise I don't usually go banging into people. I'm just a little distracted."

"Fairly new, yes." One of the slightly annoying things about freezing items, despite there being no ice involved, was that is usually left things a little cold. "I'm Alice."

As far as first impressions went, out of the people Alice had met from camp now, Angel was probably the best impression yet -then again Alice had only really met Daken and Martini, so that bar wasn't raised that high. "Don't worry about it, I'm sort of use to it by now."

"Hi Alice." Angel said with a smile following her gaze to the coffee. Wasn't it steaming before? "May I?" The redhead asked then brought her hands up to hover over the coffee anyway. Sometimes there were some serious benefits to being a walking microwave oven. Her hands started to glow slightly yellow and in seconds her coffee was steaming again. "All better."

Angelica cringed. "Used to it already. Geez, that doesn't sound good. I take it your welcome has been a little less than warm?"

Well, that certain made the incident a little less annoying, nothing spilled and her coffee was warm again. If anything, Alice managed a small smile at that. "Thanks," a careful sip told Alice that it was fine, nothing changed except the heat returning.

"Stone cold frozen really," which could probably be partly her own fault as well, but Alice considers herself prickly at the best of times. "I guess I got my timing off."

"I guarantee it probably wasn't you. We're not necessarily a bad group. It just some longer to warm up than others." Angel smiles and glances at the coffee. "Obviously, warming up is not a problem for me. I wish I'd known we were going to have a new person coming. I could have put something together for you. Like a muffin basket or something. Eth-- er, Captain Sykes would probably tell me that's not very military like but I don't care. We're free agents, outside contractors if you will. We don't have to be all G.I.Jane, do we?"

"It might've been a little me." It was probably mostly her with the jibbering kid, but he mentioned sore spots, and Alice still couldn't stop herself reacting to those. "It's not a problem."

When she'd worked P.I, she'd had certain issues with law enforcement, and really, it wasn't much different from that. "Well, it's just as well you didn't know then, I'm not a fan of muffins." Or any sort of gift, it wasn't her nature. Her prickly disposition made it hard to accept such things.

"Just the same, they could have been nicer. It's never easy being the new person." Angel continued determined to win this new girl over.

"Oh, you don't?" How does someone not like muffins? "What about cookies? Do you like cookies?"

Everyone could be nicer -except maybe this girl, who seemed to be one of those cheery types. Alice didn't exactly meet a lot of that types. "From what I've heard, I'm not the new person anymore." Which was fine by her. Less attention that way.

"No, I don't." Honestly, she didn't like cookies that much either, baked goods weren't Alice's thing. "In moderation, plain and simple. No additions. They can be okay." Alice was the type of girl who, while growing up, had jelly instead of birthday cake.

"Oh? Well, I guess since I met him first I think of you as newer. Sorry about that. We're getting a little influx of people lately. We had... we had a few people leave." It was the first time while talking her smile actually faltered. Obviously, at least one of those people were someone she cared about.

Her frown shifted into something more confused. Okay, now she wasn't all together convinced this girl was human. Who doesn't like muffins OR cookies? "So what do you like?"

"Well damn," even as she said it, a small smirk pulled at her lips. Maybe the cheery was catching. "I guess I gotta wait for the next one." She didn't bring up the possibility of losing a friend, it was fairly evident that someone left and Angel felt bad for it. Alice wasn't the kind to rub salt in wounds, she hated when people did it to her.

"Fruit, chips, jelly, dairy." She was rather easily content with basic foods. Alice had always maintained a healthy lifestyle, eating certain food groups just didn't fit in with her. A few bags of chips here and there would be as far as she'd go for a treat. "I don't really have a sweet tooth."

Angel's smile returned at the smirk. "With the way things are going, I don't think you will have to wait long."

UnAmerican. This new girl was just unAmerican. Fruit and dairy? What was this junior high health class? Next thing she knew Alice would tell her she didn't drink coffee. Angel didn't think she could trust a non-coffee drinker. "Okay, fruit basket it is."

It was true, it was like a constant stream; Alice had already heard of three since her arrival, and she hadn't been there that long. No doubt, it was something like a conveyor belt of admissions.

"Seriously? Where the hell will you get a fruit basket around here?" Alice wasn't used to getting gifts just because, Alice wasn't all that used to getting gifts at all. Jonathan had spoiled her a little, sure, but that had been at the beginning, before Alice stated that gifts wouldn't win her over.

They had though. "If you are really adamant about this, I don't like peaches. Or kiwi. Fruit with fur is just wrong."

Angel wasn't surprised by the influx of people. They tended to come and go in waves. Every time a wave left another brand new wave of people rushed in to replace them.

"The basket would be the hardest thing to get. The Captain worked it out that I can get access to the kitchen after the Chef goes home for the day. Baking is like a coping mechanism for me and as long as I supply him with sweet treats, he doesn't seem to mind. So getting some fruit would be no problem for me. It might just have to be a fruit bowl wrapped in cellophane. I just want you to know how much we appreciate you coming to work with us. I know that the circumstances may not always be ideal for how people come to be with us but you are definitely welcome here."
