I confess you are the best thing in my life [For sparkedtoburst]

While Haylie was absolutely furious about not only having been placed in a separate building from Spencer, but learning that Daken was just down the hall from him made her incredibly paranoid. Her mind was full of "what ifs" and horrible scenarios that would make Spencer's having gotten shot look like child's play and she needed to just... calm ( Read more... )

He'd been writing out his most recent set of notes, having his thoughts derailed the last time he'd tried while in the mess hall and being accosted by Daken. It was quiet enough -and with his own room, viable enough- to focus on work for a period of time without interruption.

From the moment the door closed to the moment arms wrapped around his shoulders, Spencer was just mildly taken aback until he realised who it was and relaxed. "You really shouldn't sneak around places like that." But there was a smile in his voice.

He'd probably not seen her in a little while, and although he'd noticed as well that they were in separate buildings, he was sure by then that she had the ability to take care of herself and hadn't really worried -besides, her floor mates seemed to be the easiest going group of individuals on the base. He was only mildly jealous.

Dropping his pen to his notes, Spencer gripped her arms, sort of in a hug back and grinned. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

In hindsight, sneaking up on the walking stun gun wasn't the best idea, but she trusted Spencer not to zap her for it. And getting electrocuted wasn't exactly high on her list of priorities, thank you very much. "Don't care. It's worth gettin' zapped if I get t'see you." She mumbled against his neck, just letting her walls down a little bit because she couldn't be detached and apathetic all the time.

After a minute of calming herself down, she pulled back just enough to rest her chin on his shoulder and sigh. "Well, for one thing - I got my sling off. And I just wanted t'make sure you're okay."

"Oh, no unexpected discharges just yet." For the most part he was still fairly burnt out, his power levels had to really build up again. The most he'd done without conscious thought had been spark Daken accidentally when trying to get his notes back.

"The sling was a pretty accessory, you sure you don't want to keep it a while longer?" He was joking, naturally, even as he titled his head to the side minutely so he could smirk at her. Someone as independent at Haylie would naturally not be happy until her sling was off and she was capable of stuff on her own again.

As to his being okay, "Yeah, you know I am. I'm actually better than okay I suppose." He was coming to terms with everything that happened, wasn't clamming up or anything. The talk that she'd had with him shortly after everything really helped. Now it was just a matter of discovering his own limits.

"That's good t'know. Maybe I'll sneak up on you again in the future." She finally started to smile over at him and after deciding he probably wanted his personal space back, she pulled away and instead perched on his desk next to his notes.

Haylie was out of her usual military attire after having been able to retrieve her shirt from lock-up. It was an old, faded, slightly dirty NYPD t-shirt that was just a little big on her paired with her usual pair of fitted jeans. The comment about her sling brought Spencer a rare bout of immaturity as she stuck her tongue out at him.

"I'm happy t'hear that. I've been worried sick." Well, that was the understatement of the year.

Since Spencer wasn't a clothes hound at all, he was fine in the same old military attire, the camo pants and a plain black t-shirt suited him fine. Although he had to admit her own clothes did compliment Haylie much better.

"Hey, now that we can actually get off camp, I do believe I owe you a dinner. You think this Midway place has a diner or something?" He hadn't forgotten about his offer back when she'd first bumped into him in the computer area, nor had he considered not following through with it.

It was just the possibility of actually following through. But now it seemed a little more plausible since they were being given the chance to leave the base.

Truth be told, Haylie didn't mind seeing Spencer in his fatigues. In fact, the black t-shirt looked good on him and she occasionally caught herself staring. And then she'd mentally slap herself for objectifying the man, because he deserved more than that.

His offer for dinner caught her by surprise because, well, she'd forgotten all about that until now. "Huh? Oh. Probably? I can ask Sykes if it does. It'd be even better if it was a bar."

She paused to think about that.

"Wait. I take that back."

If it was ever brought up, Spencer could go on about the objectifying of persons throughout history and the cause and effect of it for hours -it wasn't exactly an interest of his, it just happened that one of his thesis papers had been narrowly close to the subject.

Truthfully, he was a little guilty of doing it himself, but never out loud.

"Bars are evil? Or is it really just not the place to take you right now?" Spencer didn't mind bars, he wasn't a big drinker -usually only when a deadline was approaching or when something was weighing on his mind, but more often than not, Spencer had one or two and called it quits.

"Oh, not for me. I was thinking about... Everyone else." She was sure that Spencer would get it if he thought about it. He was probably one of the smartest people on base - to her, anyway.

"Though you get enough alcohol in me and it'll get interesting." And there it was again, the pervy look she reserved mainly for Spencer, complete with a suggestive wiggle of her brows.

He wasn't really catching on to what she meant. She could meant their powers, she could mean she was a rowdy drunk, she could be a flirty drunk. Spencer just wasn't sure. And, for the most part, he would really prefer that she come to a quiet dinner with him first -then they could see about rowdy nights out.

"I don't think you need alcohol to make things, 'interesting'." And he might've made an attempt at that eyebrow wiggle just to prove a point, but it likely fell flat with the small hint of pink in his cheeks.

He really couldn't help it, when a pretty girl was flirting with him as well as Haylie, he just blushed.

"Considerin' who all we have on base here, I think minimizin' the alcohol intake is a good idea." With a sage nod, she pursed her lips and decided that apparently, today was her random thought day. "I'd kill for a decent slice. Or the churros from Lupe in Central Park." And now she realized how much she missed her food.

...That was the most adorable thing ever. Of all time. Haylie let out a laugh and leaned forward on the desk to smile at him, but apparently the way she was sitting on it wasn't conducive to this sort of thing and she fell forward into Spencer's lap, knocking the chair over and landing them both on the floor.

Bracing her arms on the floor above Spencer's shoulders, she looked down at him with a rare blush and burst out laughing. Really, she was more graceful than this.

The jolt was a little bit of a shock, and a slice of electricity ran straight down his spine -although if it was his powers or not he wasn't actually surely aware on. Her blush and laugh really didn't help him from bursting out laughing and Spencer had to duck his head slightly while his hands rested on Haylie's waist. It had been a pre-emptive attempt at stopping them from falling, but it hadn't exactly worked out and that left Spencer just holding there.

Not that he was too concerned with moving, and Haylie wasn't exactly scurrying up.

"Are you sure you were an EMT? I mean, you didn't just cause accidents and need to help fix them up, right?" It was in jest, since the fall hadn't actually hurt Spencer at all. "You look so cute when you blush." That last bit wasn't meant to be out loud though.

The laughter just continued for another minute until she registered where his hands were and she licked her lips absently. Shifting slightly - mostly to ease some of her two hundred pounds off of him - she kept her eyes on him until the EMT crack.

"Jerk!" Clearly, she knew he was kidding because she was smiling as she poked his side playfully.

And when his comment about her blush came out, she turned an even deeper shade of red and ducked her head shyly. Funny how it suddenly seemed their roles were reversed. "I- uhh- thanks." She said softly, using her long hair to help shield her eyes because well, she was rather unguarded right now. And that wasn't something she felt much.

Don't they just have their moments? sparkedtoburst February 13 2011, 22:20:38 UTC
He didn't really mind; she wasn't heavy, mostly just pressing, or compressing or something like that. And it wasn't like he hadn't been almost crushed under a fair few things in his time -he wasn't going to mention the time he zapped himself in the shower and took the whole thing down on top of himself, including the shower itself and the screen.

The poke did little but make him giggle slightly and squirm, although her shy behaviour was a real turn around. "Oh, someone can dish it out but can't take it back? What? Guys don't tell you you're gorgeous all the time?"

It was almost like the military were cultivating beautiful females, and if they were mutants they seemed to be doubly beautiful. Spencer just happened to blurt it out a little more than most.

Shifting even more, she positioned herself between his legs and sat back on her heels in case Spencer wanted to get free. The squirming was interesting and she'd remember that later, because she could be so evil.

Ducking her head more, she fidgeted with the hem of her t-shirt and replied quietly. "Actually, no."

As she sat back, he elevated himself, resting back on his elbows but mostly fine with being on the floor. It was a little surprising that she hadn't developed some kind of immunity to blushing at simple compliments like that, especially when she was much younger.

"What? C'mon, at University, guys weren't falling over themselves just to talk to you?" Spencer can't really believe it -there are girls that know they're pretty and pretend not to, and girls that just are pretty and get on with it. Haylie is pretty, full stop. She's just wonderfully blessed with amazing looks that Spencer cannot fathom why anyone wouldn't be falling over themselves to talk to her.

It's really part of the reason her remarks cause the blush in him. He isn't used to girls that the jocks in high school would've got, or the ones that would be seen with the television stars and things like that. That and he was still a bit of a geek.

"In high school, I had guys approach me, but they mostly just told me they'd like t'show me the Empire State Building in their pants." Haylie replied with a roll of her eyes, finally looking back up at Spencer.

Just like he was having trouble with the fact that someone so pretty wasn't used to being complimented, Haylie was having a hard time understanding how someone as sweet as Spencer was still single.

"In college, they stayed away from me because of what I am. And I didn't exactly let them get close." Except for the one that got away, and also happened to be her first love. But that was something she never wanted to go through again.

Leaning forward, she planted her hands on either side of Spencer's waist and leaned in to whisper sheepishly. "You're uh-- the first guy to tell me I'm gorgeous." Beautiful, yes. Gorgeous, never.
