While Haylie was absolutely furious about not only having been placed in a separate building from Spencer, but learning that Daken was just down the hall from him made her incredibly paranoid. Her mind was full of "what ifs" and horrible scenarios that would make Spencer's having gotten shot look like child's play and she needed to just... calm

From the moment the door closed to the moment arms wrapped around his shoulders, Spencer was just mildly taken aback until he realised who it was and relaxed. "You really shouldn't sneak around places like that." But there was a smile in his voice.
He'd probably not seen her in a little while, and although he'd noticed as well that they were in separate buildings, he was sure by then that she had the ability to take care of herself and hadn't really worried -besides, her floor mates seemed to be the easiest going group of individuals on the base. He was only mildly jealous.
Dropping his pen to his notes, Spencer gripped her arms, sort of in a hug back and grinned. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

But the fact that they couldn't see past mutant to see that Haylie was a brilliant, intelligent girl, well, Spencer couldn't figure out how something like one gene could do so much. "It wouldn't have stopped me, I mean, perseverance wins out in the long run."
Smiling slightly as she leaned in, Spencer rested most of his weight on one elbow, using the other to push some stray hair that had fallen beside her face back, cupping it behind her ear carefully. "Well you are, however you want to say it, beautiful, gorgeous, dazzling, resplendent, stunning, exquisite. I'm a writer, I could go on."

And there he had it, another blush from Haylie. "You've gotten closer than anyone else has in almost ten years."
Oh, the touch. It was such a sweet, gentle gesture and Haylie caught herself leaning into it for a brief moment. But then she turned bright red at Spencer's overuse of adjectives and Haylie sat back on her knees while waving a hand around. "N-No, that's okay. Y'don't have t'keep goin'."

It was human nature, really. That drive for some connection, the need to have someone in that space that counted as emotional contact. Spencer knew that Haylie had cut herself out from everything, and now it was probably harder and easier in some ways to let people get close. He wasn't about to gloat, but he wasn't going to let this come back to hurt her.
"Well, I guess I was just that lucky." Sensing the discomfort, Spencer dropped the whole beautiful thing, although he'd remember to tell her more often that she was. "Every ones got to have someone to turn to, right?"

As soon as her smile came, it vanished, replaced by a look of horror as she heard footsteps down the hall. She was terrified that getting this close would cost Spencer his life seeing as Daken had already threatened his life because of her the other day in the courtyard. Haylie was quick to her feet, whipping around into an attack position while she focused some energy to her hand. Once the footsteps passed the room and kept going, she relaxed slightly but it would be easy for Spencer to see her hand trembling.

Once she'd started to relax just that little bit, Spencer climbed to his feet, hands carefully stroking along her back before wrapping around her waist in a bit of a hug, his chin resting on her shoulder. "Hey, it's okay, it's okay."
He wasn't sure what would make her so jumpy, what would rile her up so horribly so, but he didn't really like seeing it. "It's probably just Wade coming back from his ridiculous work outs. Or Mac going to smoke at the end window, she seems to do that a lot." Spencer tried to keep his tone soothing, hopefully calming Haylie slightly.

Swallowing hard, she closed her eyes and drew some of the energy in her hands back to her core so she could lay them over his without hurting him. After a long silence, she replied quietly, "You're probably right. I'm sorry."
After debating whether or not Spencer should know what happened the other day, she turned her head so she could brush a soft kiss against his cheek. "Spencer, there's a feral mutant down the hall named Daken. He's the one who tried to rape me in the Med Bay when I first got here. He tried to finish what he started yesterday and I blasted him because he- he wouldn't back down and he threatened to hurt you."

Spencer knew Daken from meeting him, and the feral had seemed fairly open to use of threats and the likes; the innuendo from his comments assured Spencer that he wouldn't really be above attempting rape. He couldn't help but feel angry and protective all in one go, tightening his hold on Haylie's waist.
"Yeah, I've met Daken." And his tone undoubtedly told Haylie how that had gone. "Don't worry about it, okay? It'll be okay." Because if this was the case, Spencer wasn't going to hold off on sparking if he needed to.

What else was there to say, really? Tilting her head forward, she lightly brushed her nose against his affectionately.

He intended to read up on the ferals as much as possible, figure out strengths, threats, the different sort of skill sets that they possessed inherently rather than what they were taught. He knew enough from the talk around the camp to realise that Daken was a major threat in the way of power and danger.
If there were any weaknesses there, Spencer just had to find them.
