guilty pleasures

The thing about writing self-indulgent fic is that self-indulgence tends to snowball. I have such a weakness for h/c, and I know this about myself so I do try to give myself firm limits for what I'm allowed to include in a single story. But with sci-fi exploring there's such endless potential, and there's so many characters that it kind of feels ( Read more... )

There is something red and gloppy dripping slowly down the lizard’s snout. Mikey’s heart is hammering so hard in his throat that he thinks he might be sick from it. He takes another step backwards, and the lizard takes two steps forward. Mikey falls over ( ... )

Bringing characters who won't admit their love together through h/c is perhaps my all time favorite guilty pleasure

Guilty nothing; it is the greatest pleasure full stop. ♥

Are panic in the cave? Are they having nonsensical adventures together?

They most certainly are! Though this is less shenaniganny than I had planned, since it's their first night in the caves and they don't know each other all that well yet.

By the time they get to the caves they’re stumbling and exhausted; they’ve been following Bryar through the jungle for hours, and they ran into lizards three times along the way. They’ve just seen about half their expedition slaughtered, and Spencer is just about ready to lie down and give up. (He thinks he might, if it weren’t for Ryan leaning heavily on his shoulder - there’s no way he could give up as long as Ryan’s next to him, no way in the world.)

It’s been dark for the last hour, and they don’t have food or supplies or anything, except for the packs of the two expedition teams that didn’t get back until after the lizards had come. They have a total of ten flashlights, which doesn’t go far when you have about forty people bushwacking through an unknown jungle. (Forty people, thinks Spencer - it had been more when they gathered after the first attack, but ( ... )

Most people have sunk to the ground in groups or by themselves, some tending to each other, some settling already into sleep; off to one side Bryar is talking quietly to a few people, and Spencer wonders how they have the energy to keep going, how they can still care about organizing and planning and making sense. He feels like he’s seen so much today, done so much that he’s used up all his caring, only wants to lie down and sleep, let whatever happens happen. Except then Ryan shifts by his side, and he finds that he does have a bit more caring in him after all, because it’s Ryan.

He can’t see well at all in the dim light of the flashlights, but Ryan is soaked and shivering and he’s bleeding from the mouth. Spencer feels a jolt of fear go through him, and wonders how he didn’t notice before. “I fell,” Ryan explains dumbly when Spencer presses, and Spencer thanks God and Bryar and everything else he can think of, because in the corner some of the injured are twitching and shaking, and people are starting to whisper, poison, and he ( ... )
