The thing about writing self-indulgent fic is that self-indulgence tends to snowball. I have such a weakness for h/c, and I know this about myself so I do try to give myself firm limits for what I'm allowed to include in a single story. But with sci-fi exploring there's such endless potential, and there's so many characters that it kind of feels

By the time they get to the caves they’re stumbling and exhausted; they’ve been following Bryar through the jungle for hours, and they ran into lizards three times along the way. They’ve just seen about half their expedition slaughtered, and Spencer is just about ready to lie down and give up. (He thinks he might, if it weren’t for Ryan leaning heavily on his shoulder - there’s no way he could give up as long as Ryan’s next to him, no way in the world.)
It’s been dark for the last hour, and they don’t have food or supplies or anything, except for the packs of the two expedition teams that didn’t get back until after the lizards had come. They have a total of ten flashlights, which doesn’t go far when you have about forty people bushwacking through an unknown jungle. He can’t see well at all in the dim light of the flashlights, but Ryan is soaked and shivering and he’s bleeding from the mouth. Spencer feels a jolt of fear go through him, and wonders how he didn’t notice before. “I fell,” Ryan explains dumbly when Spencer presses, and Spencer thanks God and Bryar and everything else he can think of, because in the corner some of the injured are twitching and shaking, and people are starting to whisper, poison, and he ( ... )
