I must say, these living conditions are much preferable to the ones farther out in the city. Did I miss anything (or anyone) important during my nap ( Read more... )

I have not heard of it. Is that a martial art from your world?

Yeah. There's, like, Karate and Kung Fu, and Jiu Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do and a bunch of others! I never really learned them, though - I dunno how well martial arts work when robots are fighting robots. We're pretty heavy.

Hmmm - some of them sound familiar, but I don't know that I've come across any of them as fully realized styles. I am most familiar with Firebending, though I have studied the arts of Waterbending and Earthbending as well.

There are ways to accomodate weight and strength in combat. Your opponants own weight can become their downfall if you know how to turn it against them. Why don't you come to a training session or two, and let me see if I can figure something out? Even if I can't be of any help, I do enjoy meeting people in person and speaking face-to-face.

You still have to show me how you play music as well.

You teach fighting?

To soldiers, usually. Under these circumstances, though, it strikes me as practical for all of the refugees to have a basic knowledge of how to defend themselves if they ever find themselves in a position to do so.

Naturally, the first lesson is that the best defense from any monster is a swift getaway, but if that is not possible, a good sturdy spear is better to have when one knows how to use it.

Huh. You train fighters? I've already got a swordmaster, but I could probably use some work with unarmed.

...The Police Station people you should talk to, I guess, about sweeping clear a building. But they might be prejudice and have some policy about what they'll let you do, because they apparently don't like young people and maybe they've got something against old people too.

I will tell Namine you send regards. If you're ever in the neighborhood and want to stop by up here too, I think you're welcome to, I'd just have to check with the others.

You'll be welcome to join me, once I find a suitable place.

That is good advice. I will contact them . . . as soon as I find out where the Police Station is. Do you read the language of this world? I can't, for the life of me, decipher any of the script here.

Thank you. I will do that. Perhaps when I

Cool. You don't have any policy about not teaching who are sixteen, right?

I can. If you want me to show you where it is...or if you're over on Marshall Street, ask someone to point it out on the maps, I think I saw somewhere on here that they've put one in the lobby.

I have no qualms about teaching students of any particular age. Why do you ask?

Ah yes, that will be most useful.

I've got a guy showing me how to use a gun now, but I'm sure learning some other not-immediately-lethal self-defense couldn't hurt in this place.

Might as well take you up on the looks-like-you-belong-in-the-next Karate Kid thing, at least...

Thanks again for the coffee. It's brought around a lot of good company.

Did it? Good, good! I'm glad to hear that. Good company is what makes this - or any other world - bearable. I'll be happy to have you as my student. It's been a long time since I taught groups . . .

What's a "gun?"

Thank you. I'm sure that would be time well spent.

A gun. Hm. It's...like, a hand-held weapon? Like a small portable canon, or crossbow. It shoots out bullets, which are little pieces of metal.

A hand-held cannon? I suppose it was only a matter of time. Well, that sounds useful. All the same, I think I'll start everyone out on polearms.

Improve our fighting styles...

What do you teach?

teaandlightning February 11 2008, 21:36:51 UTC
Traditionally firebending, but that's proven rather less effective in this world than in mine.

I'm thinking the use of the staff for those with no background in combat. It's simple, effective, hard to accidentally cut oneself with . . .

Firebending... What's that?

teaandlightning February 13 2008, 23:04:38 UTC
Ah, now THERE is a question with many answers! Some will tell you that it is an art that is beautiful to watch, and some will tell you that it is a martial art that is terrible to find yourself faced with in battle, and both would be right. Firebending is the art of controlling fire, and it is used for victory in battle as well as entertainment. Why, I knew dancers that could singe an audience's eyebrows without -

Heh. I am getting away with myself. Forgive an old man his reminiscing, my dear.

There are fewer, I am sad to say, who would tell you what a blessing it is. Firebending has become more celebrated for its destructive qualities than for its life-giving ones, though every Firebender has been blessed to carry within him or herself the light of the sun. I shall have to conclude, simply, by saying that for me, Firebending is a gift which I have been honored to bear in the course of my life, and one which I regret finding myself without.
