Welcome, ladies (and we few and lonely gentlemen of slash fandom) to the te_non_sum Notcapade discussion post! Vis à vis here, I thought I'd try and contribute a little something to the discussion for those of us who want all the slash with none of the airfare. ;)

So.

WHY exactly is incest so much more popular in slash fandom than in het?

Discussion inside! )

I'm all for het incest, myself. Angel Sanctuary is yummy. I'm also rather fond of Peter/Susan in Narnia (*is SO going to hell*) and I know there are a couple more I'm forgetting offhand. Can't explain why, though, beyond "I don't care." Um. Too much V.C. Andrews in my formative years?

If I haven't mentioned it to you, Petrellicest annoys me, although it's becoming slightly less so.

There's a *lot* of Pevensiecest, I'm told.

There is, although the vast majority seems to be P/E which isn't really my thing. I don't know why, it just doesn't hit me the right way.

I 'ship Tamcest and Wincest and every direction of Weasleycest, and it's less about overcoming the taboo than about loving the wrongness and giving in to the urge to just go with it.

And seriously? I CANNOT WAIT for McKaycest. You know it's coming! >:)

Hmm, this topic of discussion sounds like something that might've come up during the painting of a living room. ^_-

I don't actually have much to offer on it, though, since I'm not into slash or incest (although I'll repeat my disclaimer that KaoruTwin incest [Utena] doesn't squick me in the same way just about every other instance does, because it's surprisingly canonical for something that quite likely never actually happened. Also, because there's no way at all to escape the utter fucked-upedness (*g*) of it in that case.

I have a whole bunch of caveats involved if I'm getting into incest couples. Or, well, any couple really. 1) Have to actually like both characters (which is why I can't get into most popular Digimon pairings. I actually don't like some of the fan-favorite characters), 2) no breeding period, 3) have not been raised together except in certain circumstances (re: Flowers in the Attic novel).

So, generally I don't go for incest fics period. Exceptions are made for well-written FrednGeorge, Lenna/Faris, and... I think that's about it. Can't really get into Yamato/Takeru because I don't like Yamato, not a fan of the Motomiyas, I have OTPs with the Ichijoujis involved with other people but not each other, not a fan of Taichi, can't see the Li's shacking up because of Chinese tradition, not a fan of the Kou* brothers...

So, yeah. Picky. Heh.

Pregnancy. That's my theory. I was told from a young age, "incest is bad because any resulting children will be mentally retarded," and variations thereof. Down south, the only times a woman can get an abortion is when the pregnancy is due to rape or incest. The first thing I thought when reading this post was, "well, it's because a guy can't be pregnant," or "two girls can't impregnate each-other."

I don't really have an incest kick, but actually the only one I really like is het--Tokyo Babylon's Hokuto/Subaru (twincest, even!). There are a couple of couples that I think 'feel' like incest even though they aren't, though. (Paine/Gippal is TOTAL incest to me. *laugh* Same with Yuzuriha/Kamui)

Yuna/Rikku doesn't bother me at all, neither does Yuna/Aniki. But Rikku/Aniki kinda would creep me out. I'm not sure whether it's the difference between cousins and siblings, though.
