Welcome, ladies (and we few and lonely gentlemen of slash fandom) to the te_non_sum Notcapade discussion post! Vis à vis here, I thought I'd try and contribute a little something to the discussion for those of us who want all the slash with none of the airfare. ;)

So.

WHY exactly is incest so much more popular in slash fandom than in het?

I mean, you can't go around and say that it's the same. Look at fandoms like Supernatural. Heroes. Numb3rs. Prison Break. Not only are incest pairings popular in these shows, they're downright mainstream, especially for SPN, N3rs, and PB. So why? Why is something that is such a societal taboo so much more accepted in fandom? (To the point where people in these fandoms overcame an aversion/squick for it, even, rather than coming in with a kink.)

I admit, I'm most heavily involved in Supernatural; I've not watched Numb3rs, and not much Prison Break, and as much as I love Heroes I'm not involved in the fandom, not really. But I've also been fond of slash incest ships in other fandoms -- Kou^2 in Digimon Frontier, for example, and Fred/George in Harry Potter. And while HP is the fandom where anything goes -- or, rather, comes (three times a night) -- to see Kou^2 become even halfway mainstream in Digimon fandom greatly surprised me.

So what is it? I know what it is for me -- I have no squick for slash incest where I do for het incest, and a big part of that is the impossibility of inbreeding (barring mpreg, and seeing as I'm more squicked by that than most other things...). Also, I have a bit of a kink for twins (and cloning), so... yeah. Also, in some cases, the brothers are just that hot. ;) What about you all? What prompts you to go for the slashcest -- the twincest, the Wincest, the brothers Petrelli? Or, alternately, what made you overcome a squick to enjoy the pairings?

And why DON'T you ship het incest? (Or why do you, if that's the case?)
