How disappointing that I forgot to do this last year! I wish I could remember what I did for my birthday last year. This year is certainly not going to be very interesting. I've just returned from eye surgery; for the first time in my life I have perfect vision in both eyes (though am now dependent on reading glasses). Going back to work ( Read more... ) -

Yesterday I walked 11 hours over a very challenging route, then ended up spending the night in a field since when I finally reached habitation there was noplace for me to stay. Walked along the Norfolk coast today, now settled into a 16th century house in a suite with a huge tub and a fourposter bed. Well it's my birthday, why not? Visits to Holkham Hall and Walsingham and a ride on a heritage railway tomorrow. -

I'm on an enormous ship in the middle of the Gulf of Bothnia, drinking wine, eating tapas, looking out the window (there are an awful lot of islands out there...I hope we don't hit any) and checking my email. I hope youall are celebrating TEL's birthday in an equally suitable manner. -

TEL fans, I am having a (minor) heart attack. I have an old edition of Revolt in the Desert that I'd been dragging around for AGES without really thinking about it. I'm a collector, is all. Free book
I found a book on a give-away pile that I thought might be of interest to someone here. It's "Ur of the Chaldees: A Record of Seven Years of Excavation" by Sir Leonard Woolley. This is a 1965 copy from W.W. Norton & Co., with photos and drawings. It's a former library book and has been re-bound, but the pages are clean and it's in very good ( Read more... )
