[Adrian is sitting in the Owl Cave, waiting for Dan and Rorschach to show for another meeting. He has some interesting information to share, and he's certain he won't be the only one. While he waits, he figures he might as well use the time to get a little 'research' done.]I'm curious -- what kind of professions did all of you hold before coming ( Read more... )

I think you of all people should know my answer to that, Mr. Veidt.

To an extent, Mr. Luthor, of course. Although I tend to be of the mind that people don't usually reveal all their cards at once.

I have no reason to hide my business practices. Was there something more you wanted to know?

Well you didn't answer my question about the animals.

You're curious.

[There's a ripple of amusement in his voice. And then, because Don's not entirely lacking in manners:]

Hello again, Mr. Veidt.

Mr. Draper, how nice to hear from you again.

[There's not a trace of sarcasm or irony is his tone. Adrian has genuinely enjoyed his brief discussions with Don.]

You find it unusual that I would be curious?

This is three times we've spoken. Usual doesn't exist.

[He finds it interesting, in an abstract way, that Adrian would need to say it.]

What'd you do? [He asks the question offhandedly.]

You're not one for making snap judgments about people, then?

[In Adrian's experience, people usually enjoy hearing that interaction with them is pleasant.]

I ran a business and dabbled in scientific research. ["Dabbled".]

[ vaguely suspicious ] What kind of animals?

What kind of animals do you have experience with? [That's not helpful, Adrian.] Specifically, I'd be looking for someone who can handle a large feline.

The wild kind. [ equally unhelpful ]

Cats are okay. Usually smarter than humans, too.

[ welp. ]

Depending on how far back on my resume you wanna go...I've been chief adviser to the queen and realm's engineer. And and no, I'm not from Earth, and I haven't really dealt with animals unless you count running from monkey bats.

[ welcome to the wonderful world of glitch ]

Engineer? What kind of engineering?

...Monkey bats. Interesting. [He would find that to be the most intriguing part.]

Oh, most sorts. [ canon is so. vague. ] Really I was - and sort-of am again - an inventor. Kind of a non-specialized jack of all trades, ish.

[ there may be a degree of making stuff up at play, based on what glitch has been informed of his pre-lobotomy accomplishemnts. ]

And and yeah, real interesting. Beasties were about the size of a spaniel and had claws and...eugh. I prefer cats.

Would you be interested in showing off any of your inventions?

So do I. Although my taste in cats runs a bit to the larger-than-most size.

I think the kids these days are calling it space-time adventurer, but I feel I'm more of an all-purpose survivor. Who likes animals.

[ except for, hilariously, intelligent tigers and poodles with opposable thumbs. long story. ]

Space-time adventurer does have the snappier ring. How did you go about this adventuring? Is that a common thing where you're from?

All kinds of animals?

Nah, I'm from as close to what you could call "normal" Earth as it gets around here. I just happened to make the acquaintance of an alien with a time machine. [ what, that's totally normal ] And most kinds, so long as they're not trying to eat me or anything like that.

Really? [That's the kind of thing Adrian finds interesting, in a 'this could potentially yield useful information' sort of way.] I imagine you must have some fascinating stories to tell.

I generally try to keep Bubastis on a people-free diet.
