[VISUAL] so soon our transient comforts fly

Apr 28, 2011 13:10

Mattie is sitting at a table, holding her tablet propped in front of her as she nearly always does (it seems rude to communicate with people and not give them her full attention, and also she still has some concern that the tablet might begin doing undesirable things if she isn't watching it while it's on). She appears to have been using the ( Read more... )

While Dan had briefly talked to Mattie once before, it still unnerves him to see someone so young within the city. He gives some thought before responding, remembering her sense of dress and manner of speaking. He wonders if others have this reaction when he sends his own transmissions and how much of a disconnect exists between the residents.

"I'm not in need of anything myself, but I think that some people here could do with something that would help them feel a little more comfortable. It's asking a lot of someone to continue living just as before after being pulled so abruptly from their home."

Mattie remembers the man who understands about newfangled things like 'radios', and she nods cordially at him.

"It is something I have been thinking about lately. When people want for things they cannot have, it becomes a temptation to do wrong. And...I cannot abide to so wasteful, even if it is a poor trade offered by our captors in exchange for our freedom."

"Well, maybe offering to give it away is a bit premature. I'm not saying you have to spend it, but maybe you will need that money in a way you can't predict right now."

He stops to think before asking the next question. Mattie is still quite young and he isn't certain what would be entirely possible for someone in her position during her time. "Did you use a bank back home?"

"What would I need in this short time before our allotment is filled again?" Nothing Mattie can think of. She's stocked the larder with more than enough food for herself (and maybe a trip or two with something decent for Don to eat), she has new clothes, and she has a place to live and sleep. Anything else she might need is too intangible for the hatches to manage.

What a strange question. "Farmers do not often possess the kind of money that needs a bank to sit in. But this allotment cannot be banked in any case, so why should it not be used before it disappears and does no man any good?"

"That's a very noble idea," Cain replies to the broadcast. He's decided he likes this kid, even if (perhaps because) she reminds him of his son.

Sounds just like Jeb to want to pool resources.

"Well...thank you. I am hoping it will turn out to be useful."

Aside from occasionally fussing at Don about food, Mattie has no responsibilities here. It's uncomfortable to feel so useless.

"You're welcome," he says, and he would tip his hat if he were wearing it. At the time being, however, he's indoors and quite happily so. For once.

"One potential problem is the different times and places we all come from. Things don't have the same value everywhere. But if this became a more common endeavor, I bet the pooled credits could be used for a lot of good."

This is just ideas; he knows full well how tricky such a simple thing as money can get. People get greedy much too easily, and might try to freeload off of those with better means. But that aside, it is both a noble idea, and a good one.

"I see you got yourself some new clothes."

Cain folk: Not all that good at compliments.

"I do not aim to attempt to be a banking institution, but if someone less frugal than myself has fallen short of funds, it would be the Christian thing to offer help. It does not seem likely anyone will accept my offer, however."

Mattie seems hesitantly displeased by that notion. Maybe people here are better at managing their lives than experience tells her most would be.

"Yes, a change of clothes seemed practical." Not to mention making wash day easier.

It's all right, Rosses aren't very good at taking them.

Godric, who has taken a shine to Mattie for reasons of her humble outlook as much as her inner fire, smiles at this showing of generosity and turns his tablet to visual in order to reply. He's sitting on his roof.

"Many people here are accustomed to great luxuries, and would not agree with your assessment of the monthly allowance. While your generosity is a credit to you, also remember that you are as welcome to indulge in some luxuries of your own."

Mattie is always pleased to speak with Godric, he was an unexpectedly reassuring presence at her arrival and he always speaks to her like an equal.

"But I have, I have an entire new set of clothes. Shoes as well. I do not know what else I am supposed to want."

She doesn't want things anyway, she'd rather have things to do.

Godric tilted his head slightly, thinking back to the time, some months ago, when he had been glitched human. His own luxuries as a vampire, and as someone familiar with the 21st century, were not things Mattie would be familiar with or want. But perhaps he could think of some human luxuries a young woman would like.

"Have you ever had ice cream?"

"There is not much call for ice cream in Yell County." Probably not even in Dardanelle, and that's the most populous area in the whole county. She bets people in Little Rock have it all the time, though.
