005 [visual] three chords and the truth

Jul 16, 2010 21:02

While the economy was down, Fitz had helped himself to enough musical equipment to set up a small, makeshift studio in his flat's spare room. He'd picked up an acoustic and a bass guitar, some amps, and a reel-to-reel recorder, not a bad start if he said so himself ( Read more... )

Oh, hello, Fitz. The Doctor was just doing something incredibly clever with her TARDIS (read: getting her back into working order after her failed attempt at leaving Taxon. Something important needs to be clarified, however.

"Fitz Fortune?"

"...stage name," Fitz offered, a bit sheepishly. "The clubs never were too keen on giving gigs to krauts."

"Like the food?"

No, Doctor, the word you're thinking of is 'sauerkraut'.

...oh right.

"Like the common English slur for people of German extraction," he replied. "Fitz Kreiner, at your service Doctor."

"As long as it's not 'If I Had a Talking Picture of You.' Is that an anti-request?"

...oh look it's the in-canon inspiration for Fitzwilliam Fort, dogged private eye and ladykiller (many of Fitz's aliases have "and ladykiller" as a qualifier).

"Well, I'll try and dodge that one," Fitz replied, then settled into the repetitive but soothing chords of Hide Your Love Away. "Bit of an oldie, even for me. Are you another time traveler?"

"Only in as much as I'm stuck here," he says, amused. "But so far I've only found one other person from anywhere near the 30s, so some days it feels like it."

"I was born in '36?" Fitz offered. "That probably doesn't help but there you go. Fitz Kreiner, pleased to meet you."

"Back to playing, then?" Mohinder asked with a smile on his face. "I don't have any requests, unfortunately, but I'd be glad to hear just about anything." Despite four years in England, he's still not particularly 'with it' in terms of English songs.

"Hey, Mohinder," Fitz replied, also with a grin. It had been too damn long since he'd spoken to the man. "And yeah, this is my version of physical therapy. It seems to be working out all right."

Without guidance he went for cliche and started playing "Greensleeves."

"I think it's a very good physical therapy," Mohinder agreed. "I can easily see that getting your fingers back into decent shape."

Mohinder listened, happy to hear Fitz able to play. He'd heard this tune before- for the moment he couldn't place it, but that didn't really matter. He hadn't seen Fitz for awhile- the whole business with the City falling apart had taken his full attention. It was good to know he was doing better.

"That's a wonderful tune. Perhaps I could pay you for it with more curry?" He smiled back, hoping he'd have an excuse to cook again.

You're from 1969?

[It isn't Martha's favourite year. She'd spent far too long trapped there, working in a dingy to shop to support the Doctor and waiting helplessly for Sally Sparrow to return the TARDIS to them.]

Close enough. I first left Earth in '63, then came back for a bit and started traveling again in '69. Only thing I missed in between was having to get my hair cut like a Beatle.

Wow. I think you had a lucky escape there.

I'll say. So when are you from, then?

Kaylee's rubbing the back of her neck as the feed switches on. "'Fraid I can't request much 'cept the Beatles, seein' as not a whole lot made it 500 or so years...But! If you're willin' to share you're musical talent, I'd be more'n pleased to hear whatever you'll play."

"You're in luck then, love," Fitz replied. "The Beatles are one of those universal constant thingys." He started strumming a set of very familiar opening notes and - feeling a bit ambitious - he sang as well, his midrange voice roughened by too many smokes.

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's going to change my world
Nothing's going to change my world...

It was a very Doctorish song, but it brought more comfort than pain as he let the notes trail off.

"Hope that one isn't too cliche."

It's a song Kaylee can get behind, if nothing else. They hear plenty when if comes to the Beatles on Serenity, and it's almost like listening to Jayne strum about on his guitar and having everybody gather about and sing together.

"Cliche don't matter a bit. It's shiny, and nice to listen to." She grins. "Think it's just the sorta thing we need around here, more music."
