"I think loony bins have more padding on the walls."
Her tone was light, though not overly cheerful. For most people, waking up in Taxon was an unsettling experience. DG felt obliged to try and help the new arrival, instead of making the situation worse.

"How many of them are there, anyone have any idea?" He's not sure what he thinks. Brainwashing, maybe, a more than thorough job. Shell-shock, he'd be inclined to think, but they were both male and female, and the ages varied too much.

"I'd be disinclined, except in my experience, people get used to anything given long enough." Spade sighed. Something on his growing list of things to investigate, he supposed. "So. More of them than the more vocal lot, I take it?"

"A lot more," DG confirmed, feeling like both a tour guide and a bearer of bad news. "People appear and disappear all the time, but there's probably no more than forty of us." A reasonable estimate, based on the number of people who had attended the Valentine's Day Ball a few weeks before. "And a lot of people know each other before arriving."

"Huh. Interesting." He makes a mental note to check, thoroughly. There aren't a lot of people he'd really want to see here, but knowing who he knew, if anyone, would be important. "You knew someone, then?"

"A friend," DG replied with a nod, "Glitch arrived a few weeks before I did."
His presence had made it a lot easier for her to adjust to the city. It was one of the reasons why she attempted to help new arrivals whenever she had the chance. She was aware that a few people weren't as lucky as she'd been.

"Had to be a mixed blessing, that. Happy to see him, sad you'd both been yanked out of your regular lives. Well," he conceded, "unless you weren't fans of your lives, I suppose."

"We did have stuff to be doing." She wasn't a fan of being on the run or being in danger, but she was a fan of finding out who she really was and discovering memories - good and bad - she'd locked away since childhood. Without the witch's presence, the O.Z would have been a wonderful place to live. A piece of heaven, Glitch had called it. "But it was better than not seeing him."

He chuckles. "Yeah. 'Stuff to be doing' is about right, I guess." The truth is, he's not at all happy to be here, but showing that won't get him anywhere.

She gestured in the direction of the mall, which had appeared in the city a short time after DG had arrived.
"A lot of them arrived when the mall did. They just work behind the counters."

The tone of DG's voice suggested that she had tried on more that one occasion, with a continued lack of success.

She gave him a wry smile.
"Would you believe me if I said you'll get used to it?"
