Normally, at a time like this, Helen would be in bed sleeping. Most of the Sanctuary were already in bed. That was when she took her time to rest as well. Old habits from home died hard, if they died at all. However, tonight, Helen stayed up in her office with a luke warm mug of tea in her hands. The volume on the computer was low with a faint ( Read more... )

((/slowly comes back to the land of fantasy))It had been quiet in the Sanctuary lately, far too quiet. With Henry, and even Druitt there, not to mention the 'strays' that her mom had brought in, things had become a lot more lively around the place. But now Henry, and Druitt, had gone. And she wouldn't be there either. It had lowered her mood considerably since she'd found out. Decorating the Sanctuary had done a little to help, but Christmas without Henry? They hadn't had one of those in years ( ... )

Helen looked up at the door and smiled. Ashley had been more or less a ghost around the Sanctuary lately. She and Henry were like siblings, and Helen imagined the two were trying to work through what had happened together. It was a huge blow to their family. Even if their Taxon residents never saw it.

She moved down the couch for Ashley to sit down next to her.

And it still hurt, hence her quiet and solitude as of late. She'd done her part to decorate, but Ashley hadn't done much more than that. Until now. For Christmas she would show and make an effort, it wasn't right to rain on everyone else's happiness either.

Ashley gave a brief smile, joining her mom on the couch. So much to say, not enough words to give it. Ashley didn't know where to start.

Thankfully, Helen was always good at starting a conversation.

"I do wonder if St. Nicholas would be able to find his way to Taxon."

Another nasty side-effect of Bruce's hermit habits in the lab? It totally messed up his sleep schedule. So he actually was up and about to see the post, and he'd become familiar enough to recognize the fireplace.

After a few moments walking, he was standing in the doorway. He debated whether or not Helene might actually want company, and settled for lightly tapping at the doorframe. If she wanted to be alone, then he could just slip away easily.

She was pulled from her thoughts at the tapping. Helen's eyes went straight to the door where she mustered a small smile for him. Somehow it was not all that surprising to see him up so late. If anyone were the night owls of the Sanctuary, it would have been herself, Bruce, and Gabriel. Max as well, except she usually didn't wander around the hallways at night.

"Can't seem to fall asleep?"

Bruce shrugged, hand going up to scratch the side of his neck awkwardly. "I'm thinking after being downstairs in the, the lab that long? With no windows and no checking of the clock..." He shrugged again, his insomnia's explanation obvious now, rueful half-smile tugging on his features. "Saw the tablet click, and. Well, if you're asleep when it does that, it usually shows you sleeping - they're a, you know. A pain like that."

He was still standing in the door, one shoulder leaning on the frame now and both hands tucked in his pants pockets. Bruce still wasn't sure if he was welcome now, but the lack of glaring and quiet was a good sign.

Helen bit her lip and fought down an embarrassed smile. It was one thing to have her daughter see it, another for a brother figure to see it. She laughed slightly at what he said. It was true. The tablets were a pain like that. And no doubt would continue to be.

"Maybe I should just lock it in a drawer and be done with it." Helen moved down the couch to make room for him. "And I wold agree that being out of the lab is a rather healthy notion."

"Beautiful women shouldn't be given reasons to cry," Adam said, tablet held in his hand as he frowned at the image that had been beamed over it. As much as he hated to interrupt the clearly somber moment, he felt that it was something that just needed to be said and something that needed to be alleviated. As much as he thought that good people shouldn't be provided with any reason to feel like she looked right now, he also knew that the world more often than not provided them with more reasons. Good people hurt more because they cared more. Bad people didn't care about anything as long as it didn't effect their ability to help themselves.

"What is it?" He asked, leaning forward with a concern in his expression. She had done more than enough to help him. The least he could do was offer something in return, even if it was just a friendly ear.

Helen took a moment to respond. Mainly because she took that moment to make herself look something presentable instead of a mess. He was a friend, and Helen hardly showed such a display to friends. She had the strong image to continue to give to the world. The infamous Helen Magnus didn't need the world to know how soft she was.

She pushed a lock of her hair behind her ear before picking up the tablet and holding it in her hands. There wasn't much of a smile on her face. Than again, she knew if she tried to say it was nothing, Adam would just simply stare at her until she admitted it. A talent that came with old age, apparently.

"Henry is gone." She said after a moment. "As is John."

Adam knew the composed look well, the attempt to hide the damage that a situation caused for the desire to maintain an image. But as much as he could tell that she was covering up most of the effect that this was having on her, he said nothing about it. Instead, he just nodded, a quiet understanding in his gaze. He'd lost more than enough people in his life to know how it hurt, and while this was hardly the normal way to lose someone, it was just as effective.

"They're home, then," Adam said, softly, figuring that he might as well at least offer her some reason to look on the bright side. "And safe, away from whatever this is."

Her hair fell over her shoulder as she shook her head. "It's quite possible that they are home." She fought down the urge to just stand up and walk away. The habit she had when people were touching subjects that she didn't want to talk about. It was what she always did with Will, and what he always complained the most about.

Helen looked at another wall when she continued her answer. "However, the fact remains: I am not home with them. Either way they are in danger from the life we live because of the Cabal or the forces here in Taxon. they only difference is that one place doesn't have me."
