Normally, at a time like this, Helen would be in bed sleeping. Most of the Sanctuary were already in bed. That was when she took her time to rest as well. Old habits from home died hard, if they died at all. However, tonight, Helen stayed up in her office with a luke warm mug of tea in her hands. The volume on the computer was low with a faint ( Read more... )

((/slowly comes back to the land of fantasy))

It had been quiet in the Sanctuary lately, far too quiet. With Henry, and even Druitt there, not to mention the 'strays' that her mom had brought in, things had become a lot more lively around the place. But now Henry, and Druitt, had gone. And she wouldn't be there either. It had lowered her mood considerably since she'd found out. Decorating the Sanctuary had done a little to help, but Christmas without Henry? They hadn't had one of those in years.

Ashley had seen how it had affected her mom, though she hadn't said anything yet; especially not when others were around. It was late. Ashley had had trouble sleeping and, from the visual feed that had appeared on her tablet, she knew that her mom wasn't sleeping either. It might be bad timing, but perhaps they could help each other. At least here her mom still had her.

Ashley had taken her time on her way, not needing to rush or feeling the effort to move quicker. Once at the office, Ashley gave a quick knock to grab her attention before going inside, hovering slightly around the door.

Helen looked up at the door and smiled. Ashley had been more or less a ghost around the Sanctuary lately. She and Henry were like siblings, and Helen imagined the two were trying to work through what had happened together. It was a huge blow to their family. Even if their Taxon residents never saw it.

She moved down the couch for Ashley to sit down next to her.

And it still hurt, hence her quiet and solitude as of late. She'd done her part to decorate, but Ashley hadn't done much more than that. Until now. For Christmas she would show and make an effort, it wasn't right to rain on everyone else's happiness either.

Ashley gave a brief smile, joining her mom on the couch. So much to say, not enough words to give it. Ashley didn't know where to start.

Thankfully, Helen was always good at starting a conversation.

"I do wonder if St. Nicholas would be able to find his way to Taxon."

Which was always a good thing.

"I thought that he could get anywhere?" Not that Ashley believed that anymore, but she'd still humour her mom on it.

That made her smile. "Well, I imagine he only goes to places that believe in him." She tilted her head. "We have a child in the Sanctuary now. We'll have to figure out how to make Saint Nicholas show up. Any ideas?"

Ashley may have had one if that hadn't stunned her. "What? A child?" She had really been missing out lately.

"Gabriel." Helen raised her eyebrows as her expression turned sour. "I don't believe I need to go into details about how badly this can turn out."

"Gabriel as in...?" Woah, that was bad. Really, really bad. "Does he still have whatever he had?" If so her mom could probably do something to help; the help that he didn't get before, at least until this was over. If he was a child, like she'd been, it wouldn't last.

"It'll be like Henry again." Except this time she was older, so she wouldn't fall for the same tricks as she had as a child. "Except more fun."

That made her raise her eyebrows. "His ability? No. It apparently never manifested when he was a child. It makes sense. Usually Abnormalities are brought forth during or after puberty. I'm not sure even when he began to manifest his ability."

Then she shook her head. "Be nice to the poor child, Ashley. He's in a new environment and just saw his mother killed in front of him."

Nice was exactly what Ashley had been planning; kids needed fun after all. Especially after that.

"Nice. Got it. On it."

"And don't break any of the ornaments in your fun." She teased.

"Hey, I would not." Especially not hers. "There's a hatch for a reason right?"

"What? I'm talking about toys. Like, I don't know, the stuff that Henry had." And she'd be perfectly innocent in all of this and help the kid, like he'd tried to help her.

That made her laugh. "Try getting some toy cars, Ashley. Gabriel used to love them when he was a child." This, of course, she had understood when Gabriel told her about how he was sold away. Helen didn't believe Ashley needed to know that part. Patient confidentiality, after all.

"A Hot Wheels track, for example."
