I didn't like it there either. For pretty much all the reasons you said.
burger places are a little hard to come by for awesomness. There was one I went to in P-Town years and years ago, but i have No idea what the name of the place was. I just remember they kicked ass
Fuddruckers is pretty good, although I don't think I can eat there again. [not their fault, but i got sick right after eating there. so i associate it with them.]
I do actually like Sonic, and Jack in the Box though.
My impression was similar. I didn't think it was bad, but I couldn't figure out what the buzz was about. I don't put a lot of toppings on my burger, so I didn't run into the mess problem, but the burger was fairly unremarkable. The fries were better. I'd go back there again, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. I won't need to, either, as it turns out that they're opening a location less than 5 minutes from my house. But you know what else is less than 5 minutes from my house? Kelly's Roast Beef, and they make both a better burger and better fries than Five Guys.
The location I visited didn't have the hectic atmosphere you encountered. And they were playing good '80s music, so that was a plus lol.
