In my mind, Kilgharrah actually goes off and dies as well, so Arthur is truly alone. No Merlin. No Dragon. No Mordred. I mean, he's got Gwen and the other knights, but all ties to the old ways are gone.
Oh god, now you've got me going again. I'll stop.
I did write a longer one below. Maybe you found that too. And a couple years ago I wrote an awful terrible ending fic that is posted on AO3. You can find Mordred's Blood here, because you asked for more of my angst. :( :(

No, no, it's okay, I love when the things I read makes me think - this gives me the best feeling, like there are things in this world you just can't be indifferent to, you know? :) Does he? I sometimes wonder if those ties to the old ways are not the things that make Arthur the man he is, and if yes - what kind of a man he would be without them? Well, I think Arthur really didn't have any ties to the Old Ways. He was in conflict with them. If he could have embraced them, things would have turned out differently. So cruel.
Having embarked on (yet another) rewatch and having recently finished S1, this seems - yes, sad - but spot-on canon-wise, and - better yet - makes Merlin's choices and sacrifices meaningful & worthwhile, instead of ultimately meaningless and futile as they turned out to be in the actual S5 canon. So THANK YOU for this, and for sharing your feelings!

UGH. These little pieces broke my heart, but it was better to get them out then have them rolling around in my head.
