A new thought

For some reason, it honestly never occurred to me until this week that I am most likely eligible for dual Canada/UK citizenship since my father and technically also my mother were born British subjects (my mom's from Newfoundland and they didn't join Confederation until 1949). Hell, as a Canadian federal government employee, I had to sign a form ( Read more... )

Dude, you should do it. It makes it so much easier to get work overseas. Which is a good option to have. I was going to attempt to get Irish citizenship, but we found out recently that we were misinformed and they only give it through my mother's generation, and not mine :( And I was looking forward to that, dammit!

(Icon giggle!) I seem to actually be eligible for a UK Ancestry visa, which would allow me to live and work there without a work permit for up to 5 years as long as I promise not to go on social assistance, basically. I did send off an email asking how to investigate getting a dual cit, though, and I could always work on that while actually there with the visa. Awww that's too bad about it stopping right before your generation!

I've toyed with the dual citizenship idea. My dad is a naturalized US citizen which I'm told makes me eligible for Irish citizenship. I'm curious to know how much it costs.

I'm definitely eligible for a UK Ancestry visa, like I mentioned ^up there to Anne, if not for dual cit. The cost for that is mostly in obtaining the various birth and marriage certificates to prove your origins, although I expect I'd need all those for citizenship application as well so once done it's done, lol. I haven't dug far enough to get the true costs yet but I'm sure I'll complain about it in a post when I do. ;-)

Ooooh. That sounds like it has the potential to be very cool! I know I'm biased, but UK = YAY! :)
