today i'm supposed to hear about getting a new oven put in, which is potentially exciting (i really want to make my damn pizza!), but that's been dampened (haha puns) by another problem. last night, when we went downstairs we saw the entire unfinished back part of the basement is seriously flooded. which was really confusing because it didn't rain ( Read more... )

i work for a company that deals with hot water heater bursts ALL THE TIME....we aren't a plumbing company but we dry the affected area out.

if you don't have flood insurance or whatever would cover that on your homeowner's insurance then i recommend getting fans down there to dry the affected area out and at least a dehumidifier. our industrial size humidifiers and fans (though those are kind of small) are required to run for three days straight to properly dry out an affected area. was there any drywall affected? or was it completely unfinished (as in just the 2x4 support beams and concrete floor)?

if it did get to any carpeting, you'll have to pull the carpet up, rip out the wet pad, leave the carpet pulled up and put fans blowing underneath of it. once it's dry, replace the padding and lay the carpeting back down.

hope that helped a little!

luckily it only got in the unfinished areas (completely unfinished). it's kinda hard to explain how it's laid out. the hot water heater is in kind of a closet in the finished part of the basement, but it is connected to the unfinished part by a small passage (probably only a foot wide). the water appeared to have gone straight from the hot water heater to the back of the basement. i guess maybe it was laid out that way for that reason. the water didn't stream out the front at all, just all flowed towards the back, which is why i didn't know where the source was right away. it didn't ruin anything except maybe an area rug we made out of carpet remnants. i did spend quite a long time getting the water up with towels and a mop, which was incredibly tedious but i'm pretty sure i got everything i needed to. i turned on the dehumidifier as soon as i was done with that, so i guess i'll be running that for the next 3 days to make sure it didn't screw up anything else. the drywall looks like it wasn't really affected but it's hard to tell ( ... )
