The Rights of the Poor

A discussion about the poor (people on Welfare or Social Assistance).  I've seen people complain about these people living 'above their means', and I have to wonder - what does this mean?  For example, if you're on welfare, is it considered 'living above your means' if you have the following?
1)  A flatscreen TV.
2)  1 or more computers.
3)  1 or more ( Read more... )

I would have to call most of what's on your list "non-essential" and not really a right for anyone. That said, I also don't think owning those things precludes being "poor."

You also don't have to be "poor" to be living above your means, though it's a lot easier at that point. A wealthy or middle-class (if there is such a thing still) person can get into a vehicle or home that they can't really afford to make payments and upkeep on. Someone with a lot less income, however, can screw themselves up by buying something as simple as a game or electronic device and end up falling behind in paying bills. Those are all "living above one's means." What's a real bitch is when a person's means decrease, leaving them with a residual lifestyle they can no longer afford.

Still, once in a while, there's some psychological/emotional benefit to splurging, even if it means struggling later. In some cases, it might be worth it long-term. But a financially stupid move is still a financially stupid move. ;)
